Fix For Crown Urn Boiling Issues

So do you think somehow "ventilating" the base would help to preserve the guts of a modified urn? Maybe taking the bottom plate partially or completely off (my urn sits on a latticed crate which would allow cold air to mingle) or cutting some holes in the base?

Fix For Crown Urn Boiling Issues

Thanks for the reply... So in an unmodified crown urn, with the temp set to 110 (max) would I expect the light to go out? It doesn't seem to, and I can't noticably hear the element cut out. I'm wondering if I didn't un-modifiy my urn correctly? Pretty sluggish boil without the lid on though...

    Brewing With Nuts

Well I ended up brewing a hazelnut ale. Not a "nut brown ale" as you would expect, I guess it's a hazelnut pale ale of sorts - a bit of an experimental brew. Anyway I ended up roughly smashing 3/4 of a cup of whole, toasted hazelnuts. Half of that went into the mash, and the other half went...

Fix For Crown Urn Boiling Issues

OK so I un-modified my crown urn, wrapped it in a yoga mat for insulation, filled it with about 30L or so of water and cranked it up to 110. I left it outside on what was a pretty cool night in Perth, with the lid on, and came back 1.5 hours later and it was boiling like crazy!! So I took the...

Show Us Ya Fridge - Mate

Do you just run the power cable for the heating pad out the door of the fridge? I'm just about to set mine up and can't figure out how to get the power in to the fridge...

Fix For Crown Urn Boiling Issues

Well I just un-modified my urn, better safe than sorry. I'm going to wrap it in yoga mat insulation and see how it goes... Anyone else had theirs blow recently? Any happy stories?

    Lagering Process

I would have thought that the clean, low-ester characteristics of lagers were more related to the cold(er) fermentation temperatures and/or the yeasts that like fermenting at these lower temperatures... once fermentation is complete, would lagering really effect the taste that much?

My First Attempt At A Receipe

bum - lighten up! I think the OP is saying he's using a tea bag for flameout/dry hopping. Sure there are better ways to use hops but this is the blokes first recipe, and the recipe looks sound. I reckon go for it dude, it;s w wicked starting point.

Health Issues Related To Every Day Drinking?

Same here - I usually have 1 beer a night if I'm just chilling at home not doing anything in particular. Some people on this board must have iron livers, if i drank as much as some of them I'd be half cut every night!

Commercial Brewers Really Have No Idea

Jesus christ that article is hillarious - completely rediculous! "animal rights organisations like HSI (and maybe others) that want to turn everyone vegan and put an end to the traditional Aussie steak and snags BBQ. Animal rights groups don't want you to BBQ anything - except tofu of course"...

    First Ag/partial

Seriously though, nobody will give a crap if you did something silly - we just want to know what you did to get such a low FG - you know, so we can learn and understand! That's the whole point of this site isn't it? Glad it turned out well for you anyway

    Barley Wine

From my understanding it's essentially really really strong beer (like 14% or so, like wine)

    Brewing With Nuts

Does anyone have any experience/advice with brewing with nuts? (Please keep the testicle jokes to a minimum) I'm planning on adding some crushed, toasted hazelnuts to a beer for a bit of an experiment. I'm not expecting it to taste specifically like hazelnuts but do hope to get some nutty...

Home Brew Is Stronger Than Bought Beers.

I think it comes from the idea that homebrew is "rocket fuel" - uncontrolled, made by people who just want to get pissed.

**boycott** Perth International Beerfest - Fraudsters!

I had an awesome time!! As has been said there were no lines, plenty of shade, cold beer on tap, good music - it really was a spectacular day out! They had a shitload of belgians on tap there as well which was a nice surprise. The only bummer was the pricing - I stuck mostly to to the 200ml...
