Water has a good latent heat of fusion. This means if you have a big ice block, and a bit of water at 0C then you need extra energy to melt the ice before you start heating up the water.

Instead of drilling more holes, you could just run a smaller pipe inside the current ducting. Just have the pipe extend further into your "cool room" and freezer so that you aren't just cycling air back and forth.

Well coles online, where I got the picture from, has it for around the same price IIRC. But that is around 35%. You should be able to get away with around half the amount I use. (Which isn't much anyway.)
