Hmmm. I'm no expert and fermenting beer is an extremely complex subject however for what you are brewing 4 days of noticeable activity sounds right. And even though it looks like nothing is happening the yeast are still doing their thing. The basic check that you can do is to take a gravity...

I started home brewing up again last year. I did do kit beers in the early 1990's and the quality of the kit beers and brewing products have increased substantially since then. I am also assuming you are using the Coopers home brew kit which came with the Coopers fermenter. I don't have one but...

Help with American wheat ale recipe

I have a Guten 40l as well and do the same 4 steps above. I had lots of trouble brewing a Hefeweizen until the guys in the forum helped me (Mark, Legless ect). These mash times have helped the brewing considerably (but do not get me to explain what each of the steps do) Mash in 45c 10 mins...

I would be interested to know what got you into homebrewing. The OG of 1052 sounds ok......if it comes down to final gravity (FG) of 1012 then you are looking at alcohol of 5-5.2%.

    Hefeweizen Vent

I also reduced the heating element to use 1500 watts instead of 2500. Plus the weather here has been so...

    Hefeweizen Vent

Thanks Mark and Legless. It looks likely that I will seek out a slightly bigger and better system than what I have now. Good idea about lowering the element for the mashing. I'll have another crack in a couple of weeks I reckon.

Also just checked the gravity again and it is really low....1.03. I'm turfing it.

    Hefeweizen Vent

Brewing a Hefeweizen today. My fourth attempt. Number one had the bottom of the Guten burnt. Number two was average and number three was down with an open fermentation experiment. None was overly successful. So today I brew number 4 and do all the step mashes on a 60% wheat and 40% Pilsner...
