i had a mate who's star-san spray bottle had a star-san-resistant infection in it - so he innoculated every brew with this same infection everytime he thought he was sanitising.
Try doing like the pros do and clean with hot caustic & sterilise with oxonia - pH shock from theis combo kills...
If you're lazy (don't rehydrate) and you want the best possible start to your beer with yeast that will be half as viable without rehydration just do like I do and use twice the volume of yeast (two packets) - easy :)
Laziness is expensive
2 weeks or so, the positive pressure is not necesary per se, as bacteria do not have wings and don't actively fly up under your lid thread. Many-time AABC medal-winner Craig Webber doesnt even have a threaded lid - he has a SS fermenter (a keg with the top cut off) and a round/flat piece of SS...
Not saying Gladwrap doesn't work, it just sounds like a waste of effort when a lid works just as well.
But I completely overlooked the clear benefit (pardon the pun) of being able to see in and watch it all - if that's your reasoning then go for it :)
If you can, stop buying from 1st Choice / Dan Murphy's - they really don't seem to look after their beers as they should - why were they selling it after the best before (and not on special)?
Your local independent beer nutters will be a better bet - Sunbury isn't too far from Slow Beer...
Alternatively, ditch the airlock and tape over the airlock hole with gaffer tape and put the lid on the fermenter a little looser than you normally would.
Bacteria aren't magic, they can't fly upwards and around things, they can only go with airflow and so they are not going to be able to find...
Who doesn't love a bit of , eh?
And who you calling a caveman? Just cos I lived and worked in a very pleasant tropical mountain rock shelter in Sri Lanka doesn't make me a caveman! :P
also, the most recent cavemen were anatomically modern Homo sapiens with comparable brain sizes to us and...
Many lagers do use noble hops as someone else here mentioned and many others (like Fosters) use PoR hops
I think, though, that the defining feature of a lager is the use of a yeast (like Saccharomyces pastorianus) that is able to happily ferment at lower-than-ale temperatures and that can break...
Awesome guys :)
Stu - this is a holiday pure & simple - no tax deductions on this one :/
4* - that's a great pic, I have one with Anderson Valley IPA & peanuts
Here's a new one: I thought I was buying a kooky fruity soft drink from a 7/11
In reality it is ACTUALLY a shandy!! Terrible...
Just so you know it ain't all beer & skittles here in HK:
This is a really terrible beer - I got it cos I found myself in a tea-house waiting for the night markets to get set up and they have a 2 for 1 happy hour for "Blue Girl Pilsener Lager Beer" (tautology anyone?)
It is easily the most...
Heya all,
Can anyone recommend craft beer or good beer venues in Hong Kong? I'm on my way there today for a week :) dumplings, yum
I've had a search on the interwebs but I can't seem to find anything of note :(
Cheers!
D
+1
Wasn't going to mention that but hell! if little independents can match Coles'/Woolies' regular price for 5 weeks out 6 (or whatever the cycle of specials is) with their own stock that Coles/Woolies sold to the little independent at a loss when it was on ridiculous-special then good on them!
What shits me (coming from a small retailer) is the newspaper article suggests that at $28 Coles/Woolies will be selling a case of VB below the "$33 wholesale" value of the case and well below the normal "$38 retail" price ticket.
No small retailer can come even close to this and make any...
