A full bottle of Allsopps Arctic Ale, brewed and bottled in 1852, sold recently on eBay for a record $503,300. The eBay listing gives a great deal of historical information about the Arctic expedition, as well as the bottle itself:

Until the 1850s Allsopps Brewery was most notable for brewing some of the first India Pale Ales for export to the colonies. However, Samuel Allsopp was approached about a different recipe; Sir Edward Belcher was about to led an arctic expedition (1852) to search for the lost explorer Sir John Franklin. The Expedition needed a brew that withstand arctic and sub arctic temperatures, and provide a degree of sustenance and nutritious value. Captain Belcher reported that Allsopps Arctic Ale proved to be a valuable antiscorbutic, helping fight off scurvy, the bane of all sea voyages in those days. He added that the beer was a great blessing to us, particularly for our sick and that it refused to freeze until the temperature dropped well below zero.

Interestingly the guy that sold it bought it on eBay in June for $305. Now that is an awesome investment.

It makes me wonder whether that bid was fudged B) If not can you imagine what the return to e-bay would be as well.

What would you guys do with the bottle? drink it? sell it? or store it?
I couldnt resist cracking it open... Im guessing it would taste like sh!t anyways.

that's just an idiotic price to pay for a beer. it's just going to wind up getting drank by a pissed house guest or something. and if you were spending 500 grand on something on ebay, surely you'd check the sellers feedback and see the link to the beer he bought 2 months previously for $300. and to think it was probably just a crappy description when he bought it that caused it to be so cheap.

The buyer only made 1 bid on it... and all of the other things he bought (that i can see) are vinyls ~$10 each.

I think he's in for a nasty surprise!

"Congratulations you won an ancient bottle of beer, you now owe this guy $500,000"

Sought of off topic I know but, years ago I went to a garage sale and bought a carton of mixed wines for $12. I did not know much about Chateau Lafitte then. One bottle amongst the carton was a 1942 Chateau Lafitte the wine was low shoulder level very good level for the age. I did not drink it,and several years later after finding out it may be worth something I sold it through auction for $420.
