What about demyelination and thiamine depletion leading to Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome? Not to mention magnesium uptake reduction exacerbating this. It's been well known that moderate alcohol intake is good for the peripheral circulatory system, but press like this could be taken as a message that it's OK to binge.
