Did anyone know that Rye can produce hallucinations similar to LSD?

Linky

My next Double IPA with 20% Rye will be named Ergot of Rye

Cheers, JJ

I always knew my RIPA's had an 'X' factor :D

I saw a doco on this a few years back on SBS - very interesting.

They plotted a particular season across the northern hemisphere about the time of the Salem stuff and it aligned well with numerous outbreaks in the US and Europe.

There was also an outbreak in the 50's or 60's in Italy and they narrowed it down to a baker and a batch of grain.

Good read - thanks for the link JJ

They have attributed madness in the pharaohs to the ergot in Rye..

Its not pure LSD, but it is the base for it..

I havnt been seeing any colours latly :)

Thanks JJ, enjoyed that. Both the story and the site; hadn't come across that one before. Damn Interesting...

If we're going to be pedantic, rye doesn't but compounds produced from fungus growing on the rye do. So if you really want to get high, maybe lick at the mould in your drip tray instead.

Cheers for the read JJ
When I was at School and first learnt about Ergot from my Dad I told friends about it at school. Another kid knew what I was on about and said that his Mum used to Put green Rye in a garbage bag and let it go mouldy, then dry it and rub it between her hands. Then roll the flakes and crap she collected into a joint and smoke it.

Yeah, would love to hear (*fear) of the ultamate recipe.. For .halloween ..) Perhaps lots of rye and a hint of Absinth??, know it would be a hit at hallowinen.

 Denny Conn's Flashback IPA... The only beer guaranteed to make you rotate your 45's backwards to find the subliminal messages. :beerbang:

Warren -

Spent too much time during my Uni days in the library trying to work out how to do this(make LSD from Ergot mould) from reading info from a whole lot of chemistry books all of which only gave you part of the story, so I was trying to stitch it all together to come up with a method and recipe.....ah the memories...should have been studying the physics books instead!

Rye rocks! I've got a 50% rye DIPA still serving at the moment. Tastes awesome! I think possibly the almost 400IBU's may be the cause of hallucinations though.

This is what Erowid had to say :

Ergot
BOTANICAL CLASSIFICATION
Family :Hypocreaceae
Genus :Claviceps
Species :purpurea (rye); africana (sorghum); paspali
COMMON NAMESErgotEFFECTS CLASSIFICATIONDeadly Poison; PsychedelicDESCRIPTION
Ergot is a fungus that infects cereal grains, replacing kernels of the fruit with small black masses of mycelium. It produces ergotamine, a potent vasoconstrictor and precursor to LSD. Ergot poisoning (St Anthony's Fire) causes hallucinations, gangrenous loss of limbs, and death. Outbreaks plagued medieval Europe and were associated with witchcraft and the Inquisition.

I always used to boil up a batch of mushrooms and have a beer to calm it down a bit if needed. That was years ago though.

cheers
