Hi all,
My Barley Crusher grain mill was bought some months back & I am about to do my first AG. The rollers have acquired some surface stain which looks like rust & wondering how you all go about cleaning the rollers. I tried the wire brush & it didn't seem to move much at all.
Cheers,
Crusty

If you have tried a wire brush and it is still there, not much you can do.
Throw a handful or two of malt through to clean the rollers, this will remove any rubbish that could potentially end up in your beer.
Keep your crusher stored as dry as possible, spare bedroom of the house, if you can sneak it inside.

Resurrecting an old thread as I'm too lazy to start a new one. I was lucky enough to get a MaltMuncher grain mill for fathers day (after about 6 months worth of massive hint dropping) and I notice the rollers have a film of oil / grease left over from the manufacture process. I'm not keen on dunking my shiny new mill in a bucket of soapy water, any hints on removing the oils?

Sacrifice 500 grams of grain, mate. Then brush the dust of the rollers with a paint brush. Should do the trick.

What's wrong with taking the rollers apart and giving the a thorough first time washing? Just dry the mill well straight away after (towel, hair dryer, heat gun, ...) I'd take the mill apart and give everything a good wash.

Just mill a few kg of rice...sometimes pullung mills apart is a PITA

Is there a real problem with a small amount of rust on your rollers?

No considering the rest of the possibilities.
What would they be? I'm not being a smart arse but after my last stuff up. I need to ask more questions.
I thought I was all over this brewing stuff.

If it's the KK mill, it comes apart real easy. Mine was covered in grease so I pulled out the rollers, wiped the excess of all surfaces and rolled them in a shallow pan of degreaser so that only the knurl of the roller was being degreased.
A quick reassembly and it was better than new.

Like stones insects etc you find in malt bags, surface rust is not going to do any damage to mill or mash.

Just run some rice,birdseed....whatever youcan get your hands on ....thru it. Will clean the rollers and give you an idea on how its running

I guess I should clarify; my mill looked like it had been dipped in a grease bath.

If it were a thin coating i'd give it a good wipe down then sacrifice some grain.
