New laws are making life difficult in the Kimberley Region for the man on the land who enjoys an alcoholic bevvie!

Family friends have been affected and plan on moving into home production of beer.

Have a read: Alcohol Sales Restrictions

These new laws present some difficulties for residents, but more so for people living out of town/on the land who rely on hotels located in towns and cities in these remote areas for supply of alcoholic beverages. Many live quite some distance from cities/towns where hotels are located and don't call in to the local supermarket/bottle shop every second day like their city cousins, for some it's many hours driving just to do the household shopping. So naturally while in town shopping must be done for supply of all the necessary items to sustain the household until the next trip. Shopping trips involve buying food, clothing, payment for services, the mail, bill payment, and of course some social visits and of course supplies of alcoholic drinks for all living/working on the farm. Now, these areas are subject to weather events, and periods when they can be cut off for long periods especially during "The Wet". It's almost a requirement for these folk to have a number of large freezers or a cold room in order to manage living in such remote areas.

Imagine having to work around a specific time limit targeting cartons of beer which can only be purchased between 5 and 8pm and one block per person. Pastoralists are exempt providing they order 24 hours in advance. So get to town having forgotten to order your alcohol and, sorry one carton.

So here's the rub: There's nothing stopping Kununurra and Wyndham residents ordering or bringing alcohol in for themselves. So if they have to pay freight for delivery of alcohol, they may as well be paying for freight for homebrewing ingredients and making much more for their freight dollar than they would receive purchasing commercial alcoholic drinks.

These guys are well equipped, lots of fridges and freezers, home cold rooms, well on the way to what's required for homebrewing quality beer.

I've suggested they start with fresh wort kits, good yeast and temp control. Plus a kegging system for the coldroom.

Good on them I say! think we could see an increase in membership as these new liquor restrictions are applied to alcohol sales outlets in remote areas of Australia.

Screwy

this is a load of crap!!!. I feel sorry for people that live away from towns and as you say can be weeks or months before they can get back so to have 1 carton for months would be stupid

Now there is a market for teaching people how to brew and home malt if barley or wheat are grown in these areas.
