Looking For A Meat Pie Recipe

I was in Melbourne for 3 month back in 1994 and while I do like your beer and women, I was blown away by meat pies. I'd get one every day when the tea cart made its rounds, and then have a couple at lunch with a potato patty piled with salt. I remember the method: take a bite and then fill the bite cavity with tomato sauce. I was even mocked by the natives but didn't care; those things were awesome, despite the fact that the primary ingredient was simply the vague "meat." I think the name was Four and Twenty, or Ghillie or something like that. I even had a couple at MCG during a footy game while guzzling at least a dozen beers.

Anyway, I can't find them here in the U.S. and was wondering if any of you have a good recipe for homemade meat pies.

P.S. Another great memory was working late and getting a massive order of flake and chips for the group wrapped up in layers of paper. It was the greasiest stuff ever.
 
if you make them at home they won;t be anything like the ones you buy.... unless you;ve got access to the "Special Meat" they put in...

I remember looking at the ingredients during lunch with my mates, and laughing out loud when I saw Meat. They asked what was so funny and I said that Meat was so vague, and that kind of labeling would never be allowed in the states. That's when I first learned about wombats.

I think americans strayed towards making meat pies once remember you killed phar lap, over here we don't use the usefull horses just the old dodgey ones.

The traditional definition of "meat" in pie making (and sausage making for that matter) is anything that used to be attached to a 4 legged animal. Generally best not to know.

Ever thought about what was in a hot dog? Didn't think so.

I stopped eating the local meat pies when I purchased one which contained ingredients that had not been pulverised into total anominity. The lumps of lung/artery were just too rubbery to chew up.
 
Take one dead horse
Take some Pastry
Mince Horse
Fill Pastry
Cook
Put so much tomato sauce on it that it actually tastes good
Eat.

Standard Aussie way innit. I ******* love meat pies and dim sims.

Even if they do contain all that offal and bits they call "meat" I still want one now.

PS Just don't mention HJ's Whopper. I haven't tried Burger King whoppers here but for $AUD6.50 that won't be anytime soon.

You haven't been into Burger King but do you know what a Quarter Pounder is called over there? (Trying for an obscure Pulp Fiction reference and hoping someone else out there gets it).

It's a mob in the US specialising in Australian foods. Not really sure how keen you are to hook into a few "mystery bags" however the price including shipping seems a little steep to me.

While at uni I worked on the production line at the HJ's burger patty supplier and yes they are 100% beef without any other additives. Crappy cuts of beef(Flank n flap)but all meaty n no offal or dates. Before cooking they are 33% fat but the flame grilling machine allows a lot of the fat to drop away. I think I lasted 4 shifts - walking from -20C super chiller to -1C factory floor to 33C outside cant be good for your body....

No affilitation other than I suffered 4x8hr shifts making burgers....
