Just a thought from the "Is It Just Me Or Is Seriously Wrong" thread - black beer & cola. Interesting !!

For our next inter club brew competition, I am thinking of a Bundy and Coke flavoured beer (yes we do silly things in our part of the world. That said I tasted a coffee flavoured porter at the State Champs and I was impressed)). It'll be a 2 litre brew so as not to waste a keg full of crap and to save on the Bundy.

Add the coke & bundy after fermenting a black beer ?

Try to include the B & C in the ferment ? Will Bundy rum ferment being a sugar based drink ? Coke in fermentation - what'll happen if anything ?

Anyone tried anything remotely as stupid as this ?

Havent tried that yet, I did put 1 teaspoon of chilli powder in every bottle of a whole batch, trouble was it was so damm hot!! so did the right thing and drank some more, ended up with one eye looking at the other one in less than 3o minutes. wont try that again.

Cheers Steve B)

Yes, all the sugar will ferment out in the bundy/cola. Best bet to retain any sweetness would be to either pasteurise/filter before adding the bundy/cola and bottling, or use a generous amount of crystal, and add the bundy/cola to the ferment. Make sure you use a yeast that can handle the additional alcohol from the bundy.

I'm sure it will taste like crap. :)

They actually served this at a pub here in Bundy for a while (maybe still do?). What they did was to take a keg of beer (XXXX Gold I assume though I never did ask or care) and join it with a keg of Bundy & Rum, then pour from tap as per usualy. I assume they just put a T in the line to post mix as they served? Not sure but the young girls seemed to like it alright.

oh, that's just wrong. Stop it!

You're making baby Jesus cry!

:D

I quite often mix some bundy and coke with beer. It usually goes in a body temperature fermenter on the occasional Friday night. Judging by the smell of the gases eminating from the airlock the next day and the look of the trub, I wouldn't be bloody tasting it... :p

If you can find them, rack a black beer off onto some rum barrel oak chips. As for the Cola taste, not entirely sure, you could try using those artificial flavourings you can get in supermarkets and such, but I wouldn't recommend it. Using plenty of sugar, brown or possibly even mollasses, in a decent amount in your dark beer might help give it that sugary cola-like edge.

Hey interesting point - does coke ferment? I assume it's a pretty bloody simple sugar, but maybe preservatives or something would inhibit fermentation...

Not sure how you'd go with all of the chemicals in it, preservatives, caffeine, etc. If you were going to use, I reckon you'd be better off finding some of that Coke/cola surup stuff they use in drink dispensers.

the amount of preservatives will be diluted enough for your yeast to handle the tough conditions, unless you're planning on a 100% coke wort.
