From here.

Great to see, Bond giving up the martinis, even if it is for a Heineken.

Doc

Forget the martini - give that man a beer. That could be the rallying cry in the upcoming James Bond movie Casino Royale, in which the suave British super-spy is set to drop his exclusive taste for martinis and instead take up some plebeian beer-swilling, according to the Hollywood Reporter Friday. Producers of the movie have even signed a six-figure deal with beer giant Heineken for a promotional partnership that will include a television commercial shot on the Bond set featuring Bond girl Eva Green and directed by Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan.

Doc,

I suppose that even the great "James" has to start with an entry-level beer.

Also v interesting that the press can't help but take a sideways swipe at all beer drinkers with the comment about beer-swilling. I'm actually offended by that narky impression that the uncredited author has made, and and I wonder if there is indeed any swilling,as such, in the entire movie.

"So what" if the movie-makers are happy to take money from a beer company, or if the first Bond book had him drinking beer?
Would it have mattered if, say, the sponsorship had come from Guinness or Chimay or Sierra Nevada, or Unibroue?

OK, my 2 cents has run out
Seth :p

Hmm... Bond driking beer... I suppose I could accept it if it was in the original book... I'm not too fussed really what beer it is, though (in Live and Let Die, Bond drank a different drink- not sure what it was right now- to distance Moore's character from Connery's character, but luckily that didn't stick)

Disgusting.

It's bad enough the number of commercials in the ad breaks of commercial TV, and the number of plugs in regular TV programming. You can't even pay for Foxtel and get away from the ads. You pay to go to the cinemas to watch 20 minutes of ads before the movie, and now they're putting ads in the fecking movie?!

By the way, I wrote this comment enjoying a nice, long glass of Coca-Cola on ice, with a delicious, legendary Mars Bar. Just thought I'd let you know.

No affilation of course!

Well I am a Bond, by birth and surname, and I always prefer a beer.Home brewed, not commercial : :p :D

This isn't anything new. The bond movies practically invented product placement in movies.

Aston Martin, then Lotus, then BMW, then back to Aston Martin.

And Rolex watches, supplanted for a little while with Seiko, then Omega, now back to Rolex (I think).

Didn't he have a deal promoting some crappy brand of vodka in one movie?

it's just one big fkn commercial, get over it

six figures - i'd swill a few heinikens for that too

My issue with this is that most of the product placement to date has been incidental to the plot or character (For example, the Bond character has always been associated with sports cars in the books, not so much a specific brand or type).

In this case though, the martini is specifically a "trademark" associated with the character. Would you every see Bond climb into a family car (say a station wagon, or a people mover?).

I'm not making a judgment call on the choice of bevy, just that there are certain things that make Bond.

"Your regular Martini Mr Bond?"
"No - gimme a Heiny - and this time don't shake the bloody thing!"

ROFL...that is gold

Oh, and there is this quote from the linked article:
"Bond purists will be grateful to know that the beer plot is not just a money grab by the movie's makers. Casino Royale was the first Bond book written by Ian Fleming and the only one in which Bond drinks beer."

I take it that means he'll be back on the Martinis next movie :)

PZ.

it strikes me that they decided to throw a beer into it and found a sponsor that'll throw money at them to make it their beer. At the end of the day it's all about how much money the movie makes, and this will increase that amount
