    Recipe Help Please

Tested gravity today: it's at 1011, so I guess the yeast had a tiny bit of fermenting left to do since that previous post. Since the other day, the hop aroma has improved greatly! The cascade is still there, but the galaxy has started to get that wonderful fruity aroma! YUM! So I guess the...

Grain Of The Week - Rye

Too late to edit. Well, as it turns out the Cow had a threefer on 3 Ravens beers. So I got their 'Ravenator' (bock), their 'USB' (Ueber Special Bitter - ESB) and the 'rye' (roggenbier). The bock was average, the roggenbier was ok. BUT... the 'USB' was awesome! With the roggen (which this...

54IBU!? Doesn't taste that way! I guess we call that 'balance'.

Grain Of The Week - Rye

I have the Spotted Cow Cellars here: one of the best in QLD :D I think I've seen the 3 Ravens Rye, might give it a go. Edit: actually, it's the best bottle shop in QLD, apparently: http://www.spottedcow.com.au/_webapp_12329...TLE_SHOP_IN_QLD! No I'm not affiliated with them. I just love them...

Grain Of The Week - Rye

I've never had a Roggenbier. I'm not very familiar with German styles. One of my favourite beers is Sunshine Coast Brewery's Rye ESB. It's like honey! Delicious! And this is coming from someone who isn't usually a fan of really malty, less-hopped beers (more a Pale Ale kinda guy). Can...

Whats The Worst Beer You've Ever Tried?

Velkopopovicky Kozel. I too saw it at Dan's once and was like "look! It comes from Plzen! Real Pilsner!" Got a bit of a hardon for 'real pilsners' after drinking Budejovicky Budvar and Staropramen in Czech Republic. Kozel however... give me a XXXX Bitter. I'm serious. Here's what...

    Recipe Help Please

Fermentation seems to have stopped. Gravity's at 1012. It's extremely cloudy and chunky (not like Cooper's in a bottle, more like to the point of looking yucky). I think I'll let it sit on the yeast for a couple of days at fermentation temp (I set it to 18.5 +/- 1*C), but it's been sitting...

    Recipe Help Please

Boiled on Saturday, yeast pitched yesterday. Fermenting at 18.5*C in the fermenting fridge. Yeast is a bit slow to start bubbling, but I have faith in Craftbrewer's yeast (1056) so I'm sure all is well. OG is about 1052, so a hair less than expected. Used: 3kg Morgan's Caramalt Amber 1.5kg...

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

STOP PRESS! So, as it turns out, I never stirred the wort properly. Gravity is 1052. I'm a ******* idiot. Case closed. I'm highly embarrassed. Also, thank you everyone who helped me be a ******* idiot (i.e. tried to solve my nonexistent problem). *makes a new username on AHB* PS: I...

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

As I said, I was a bit confused about it being called 'Caramalt Amber' so I asked him if it was "normal amber LME" to which he replied "yes". If you are right, that means the LHBS guy was in fact wrong, kinda. However, this still doesn't explain the gravity, so despite my frustrated...

Yeah, but surely they'd only be inaccurate to +/- a litre or so, right?

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

Yeah it does. Grabbed my mate's hydrometer. Same reading. The mystery continues... EDIT: I guess I'm pitching two packets of yeast and brewing my 'pseudo-quadrupel' then. I'd still like to solve the problem though.

I KNOW!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Gotcha, makes sense now. Will do.

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

I'm ringing my brew partner, I'll get his hydrometer. Might as well check all possible mistakes, huh? EDIT: just rang him. Going over there to get his hydrometer. I'll ride my bicycle to burn off some of the copious amounts of Coopers I drank last night, or the copious amounts of Kilkenny I...

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

This is a little bit over my head, but I trust your calculations! Just double-checked everything. It was indeed 4.5kg of LME (kept the labels for reference), and there's definitely 25L in my fermenter. I've measured the wort with the hydrometer 3 times now, and it reads the same each time...

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

Checked the hydrometer in water. Bang on 1000. Yeah the dried 1056 from Craftbrewer. So that's 12g each (x2=24g for two packets). I really want this much? Not doubting you, just checking. lol, another $4.25 worth of yeast. This is turning out to be an expensive screwup :P Ok, turned...

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

Meh, I don't care nearly as much what colour it is. Now that some of the cloudy sediment has dropped it's a lovely red colour :icon_cheers: Exactly my thoughts! Ok, well maybe my LHBS guy isn't such a twat after all. Or maybe he still is? We will get to the bottom of this! Wyeast 1056...

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

Yeah, tried again a few minutes ago. The OG's dropped by a few points, but it's now about 15 degrees cooler too... If you use BrewMate you can DL the recipe in a previous post. Yeah... but... grrr! Again, is BrewMate being the problem here...

    Morgan's Caramalt Amber Lme

That's my best guess. I'm not sure. I mean... given my OG, I'm most likely looking at around the 9-10%ABV mark. With the crazy amount of maltiness, that makes it a bit like a Quadrupel, but hopped with Cascade and Galaxy. I've never brewed scrumpy that strong, let alone an ale. Then again...
