    Cold Crashing and Carbonation

Hi All, Will cold crashing still work if I have already carbonated my keg? Just finished a nice Pale Ale with an ABV of 6.4% - can't brag about brewing efficiency though - who cares.

Yeast starters - a bit like "it never rains in Southern California"

Mark, I shall read "Braukaiser" and thanks for the information. I get a general feeling from reading numerous posts that as far as yeast is concerned "the more the better". Obviously misleading or as you politely put it "problematic". I shall read on. I notice most recipes that I have seen have...

Yeast starters - a bit like "it never rains in Southern California"

To the degree of my understanding on yeast starters I hold up my hands and ask... But first a bit of background I'm an engineer so at some time, along time ago I could do math, now when you all talk about (x) billions of yeast cells in a starters , I really have to ask myself were is the proof...

Mouth, ABV and what lights your fire

Last time I posted I was brewing a Belgian Gold. I was having issues with clarity, however, after only a few weeks we appear to have a sociably acceptable beer, clarity wise that is. The problem for me is this is a reasonable high ABV beer at 7%. I taste many of my brews as early as a few weeks...

Looks like the deal for hops too, where can I get hold of one?

My query is really about how much trub should I actually separate from the wort going to the fermenter. Is it 2.5 litres, 5 litres (which seems a bit much) or none in the case that I turn the outlet south. Then everything hits the fermenter.

Hi guys, For your interest I have attached a brew day sheet from the same source as the Belgian Gold you saw yesterday. This as you will see in an English IPA that I have not yet brewed - any comments before I make a start?

    BIAB, efficiency and ABV...

I have one final (you hope) question… The question came about while I was looking at numbers associated with brew calcs. Trub volume is the issue - my brew kettle has an elbow outlet on the inside, if turned in a horizontal position I would retain 2.5 litres of trub, if turned vertically I would...

Tony/Mark Appreciate what you are saying and after further reading and taking in comments from other members I can now see that the word “efficiency” is used in a similar fashion to “Benchmark”… if I’m trying to hit my Benchmark which is, say 70% then I design brews to suit.

Tony, I agree with you that I should get my head around the spreadsheet and I am intent on doing so. As WYNNUM1 says if I’m getting good beer why bother with efficiencies. I guess for me learning the science (if you can call it that) is as important as the taste - well almost. Thanks for your...

I don’t personally use a brew calculator as yet and BrewMate is the calculator used by the supplier of my pre-packed brew kit. Here is a link to the beer we have all been discussing.https://cheekypeakbrewery.com.au/cheeky-belgian-strong-all-grain-recipe-pack-makes-23ltr-of-beer I have the BIAB...

Thermometers, I have a digital and a glass regular type - both read the same and they agree pretty much with the mash cooker’s electronic temp controller. NOW, what I failed to explain earlier is that I’m at the stage were I buy a pre-packed all grain recipe from a supplier and with it comes...

    BIAB, efficiency and ABV...

Tony121, Great to hear from you. As I explained in an earlier note to Wobbley74 I am not familiar enough yet to answer your question “What Brewhouse efficiencies are your recipes set to”. At this stage I buy a pre-packed all grain recipe from a supplier and it comes with the Brew Day sheet that...

Hi Mark, The first part of your question is fairly easy for me; I have a temperature controlled electric mash cooker with claims a hysteresis of <+/- 1C. That and my thermometer give me consistent readings. I use the Brew Day sheet from BrewMate to determine my mash temperatures as in strike...

Look mate, I’m sorry to say I have no idea what you are talking about - not being rude, just new to brewing and still on a vertical learning curve. I will answer Mark's (MHB) questions maybe that will throw some light on to what you are actually asking me. I thank you for being patient.
