    Geelong water - October 2022

Hi all. Barwon Water has just sent me the latest water quality results for water in the Pettavel zone in Geelong, which seems to take in the Waurn Ponds/Highton/Grovedale region. You can see the relevant map here. The results are: Parameter Average Value (July – September 2022) Units...

Geelong water: Does anyone know the sodium and chloride levels?

Hey all, I've had a response from Barwon Water, who provided me with the following results for the Pettavel water zone (which seems to take in Waurn Ponds, parts of Highton, Grovedale and the areas out to the Surf Coast - you can check it out here): Parameter Average Value (July – September...

Geelong water: Does anyone know the sodium and chloride levels?

Thanks mate. I have values from three or four years ago too. I just had a hankering to update them! I'll send Barwon Water an e-mail and if they respond I'll post it here. cheers

Geelong water: Does anyone know the sodium and chloride levels?

@Brewmeister70, did you ever get a reply from Barwon Water? I'm updating my profile and I need the sodium, chloride and bicarbonate levels, which, as you note, are not listed by BW. Cheers Aaron

    losing gravity in the boil

I actually update my efficiency after each brew based on what Beersmith tells me was that batch's efficiency. I keep a rolling average to ensure I'm right in the efficiency ballpark for my system. Currently at 72.9%. Cheers

    losing gravity in the boil

Yeah, that seems the only logical conclusion! Cheers

    losing gravity in the boil

Yeah, I can only assume it's not been stirred enough, which I never would've thought at the time given the amount of stirring I actually do. Cheers

    losing gravity in the boil

I would say by default the sample is coming from the bottom of the wort simply due to the fact I'm sticking a big wine thief in there, but shouldn't that cancel itself out when I'm taking the pre- and post-boil samples from a similar depth? Cheers

    losing gravity in the boil

My science head says this is impossible, but my last two brews have seen me lose or gain no gravity during my boil. Today I had a pre-boil gravity of 1.046 and a post boil gravity of 1.046 (75-minute boil with pre- and post-boil volumes hit (29l down to 20l). The previous brew saw pre-boil...

    Cleaning And Sterilising

Rinse after use x3, drain and sanitise on bottling day is my exact process as well. I'll usually sanitise a second time moments before bottling, and have never had an issue, 27 brews in. I do, however, soak all my bottles in PBW before using them the first time. Cheers

Where has all the 2-row gone?

Good point, my bad! I've always used Briess 2-row malt as my base and had forgotten it's just standard a base malt! Here I was thinking it was something special... Thanks for your replies. Cheers

Where has all the 2-row gone?

Where has all the 2-row gone??? No-one seems to have any! Planned an American IPA, with a grain bill of 5.1kg of 2-row, a little bit of Vienna (450g) and 150g each of Munich and Carapils. If no 2-row is on the way, any suggestion on a good alternative to 2-row in an American IPA? Cheers Aaron

    Airlock query

On the assumption you're not taking the piss, it's probably the first time you've screwed your fermenter's lid on properly.

    New to AGB. Equipment suggestions.

Bare minimum set up is similar to Whistling Jack's, but you can get away with: gas burner gas bottle 10 gallon kettle (make it good quality - buy once and never again) 20L stock pot 10 gallon mash tun (make it good quality too) mash paddle immersion chiller fermenter some tubing to...

    Best Honey for brewing?

Thanks for this. I'm actually using a Gordon Strong recipe, and I misread the volume of honey - I'll be putting about 450g in, not 1kg! He says to use Meadowfoam honey, but I've never seen that in Oz. Cheers

    Best Honey for brewing?

Howdy. Am looking to do a honey brown ale next weekend, but having never brewed with honey am looking for recommendations on a good honey to brew with. Will add the honey in the fermenter at high krausen, diltued with an equal amount of wort before adding. Not worried about introducing oxygen...

    Mash out

Does anyone here bother with a mash out step? I've always done one, raising the temp of the mash by infusion to 74 degrees to halt conversion, but many recipes I see don't list the step as necessary. I'm batch sparging, and it's only adding an extra ten minutes and it's not at all an...

    Boil time...

Hi, I'm doing a clone of Avery's New World Porter (an American brewery). The grain bill has 4.3kg of Briess pale malt, 1kg Munich and some Caraaroma, chocolate and black malts. The recipe wants it boiled for 90 mins, but I don't see the point for that grain bill. Any reason, other than to...

    Adding water post-boil?

Howdy, I entered my first comp recently and the beer was judged as having some DMS in it, which as you can imagine impacted the score. I (and some of the judges) put the DMS down to having a problem with the boil - presumably not vigorous enough to eliminate the DMS created during the boil...
