    Super simple PID controller build/wiring

You are using it to'Control' not to 'Isolate' ... there is a difference. You are correct that you cant legaly 'isolate' through a solid state device, but they can be used for functional(control) switching. What exactly do you consider the issue with having voltage on the element. The current...

    Rice

How do you calculate the OG when using rice? My last brew I used 2Kg of rice that was cooked using absorption method (about 3.5L of water), but in beersmith I could only find flaked rice. Is there a cooked rice in beersmith? My Og ended up about .005 low and I had an extra 3L of wort (58L...

    Super simple PID controller build/wiring

Why don't you just put the element on/off switch in series with the SSR control. That would free up your contactor to use with the E-Stop to drop the mains. What you have with your e-stop at the moment is more of an earth leakage test button. You could have a button to do this as well as an...

    Controller amps and elements

At the end of the day the install looks legit (although now days any power cct or lighting cct must be on rcd). That rule hasn't always applied and does not need to be enforced retrospectively. So in my opinion the cable is protected regardless of the load (max demand by limitation). So you...

As3008.1 for current carring capacity. Dont forget those derating factors. Lol. Good old tafe days.

    BrewMonitor project

Maybe you should enquire and get a price, will probably need 4 of them to balance the platform the fermenter sits on. No good getting high accuacy load cells without a high accuracy controller, so best get a price on one of those to. I recon you might get out with $5k, but we will see. I...

    BrewMonitor project

Just thinking on this load cell idea. A loadcell with a +/-1% accuracy would still give you a +/-200g reading on 20kg. To get to +/-1 gram at those weights means +/-0.005% accuracy. Without looking, I would be suprised if loadcells and the amplifiers would be able to achieve this. maybe NASA...

    Yeast nutrient

I might give it try this time round. I wouldnt normally add nuttients either but beersmith tells me I will be underpitching by about 200b cells even with a 2.5L starter on a stir plate, with 3 packets of S23. My main concern was that some of the yeast will survive and spoil the batch.

    Yeast nutrient

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use bakers yeast, added to the boil, as a nutrient for the beer yeast during fermentation? I have an old can of bakers yeast in the fridge from when I was baking bread awhile ago. Im planning my first ag larger and wonder if I should add some to the...

    RecipeDB - Vienna

Just curious if im reading the hop additions correctly. How long is the boil? Are you adding saaz at 70 then 60, or are they first wort additions?

    Arduino controller help for BIAB

Yeah, defiantly can't switch dc loads with a SCR ... Well you can turn it on, but not off! You could use a regulated 12vdc supply large enough for the pumps, and just go into the Vin pin of the arduino UNO. The UNO has an on board 5v regulator. At least that way you only have one power...

    Syphon Bottle Filler Machine

Yeah I have seen that counter flow filler video, which is no good as I don't have a keg setup, and If I did I wouldn't need to bottle the whole batch anyway. I understand the oxygen problem, however I think you could minimise this by having the float valve outlet under the surface, and keeping...

    Syphon Bottle Filler Machine

Hey, I was looking around at bottle filling machines and came across the syphone bottle filler type which looks simple with little moving parts etc. Does anybody know anywhere in australia that sell these or similar? I was considering building one, has anybody else made something similar...

    Temperature Probe

If the probe is a thermocouple you cannot just extend it with normal copper wire. If it is a resistance type probe, ie PT100 or thermistor than extending it a couple of meters or so will likely add very little error, none if it is a 3 or 4 wire PT100. If it is a thermocouple, you can buy the...

    PID PV reads incorrectly

Thanks, I will try changing that parameter next time I brew in a couple of weeks. In not that impressed with the controller anyway, mainly because it only shows 1deg increments, and there is no manual function for controlling the boil. I made a simple pwm for the manual part with a changeover...

    PID PV reads incorrectly

It's a k type thermocouple, mounted in an aluminium pipe acting as a thermowell. There are numerous settings but nothing relating to the displayed PV. Anyway I have a workaround, by setting the sp away from the current PV it reads correctly... Something to be mindfully aware of though...

    PID PV reads incorrectly

Just noticed an odd thing when doing a brew today. I have a REX-C100 PID controller, and it is the first time I have used my new setup. I noticed that when the PV comes up to sp it stays there exactly. At first I thought, that's great it's keeping the temp perfectly. However once I put my...

Control Freezer/Fridge that has no thermostat (microcontroller)

    1) there probably is a better way, but what you are planning is simple and should work fine. 2)No, not likley. 3)Depending on how smart the fridge is. There may be something in the logic that signals a problem if the compressor is running (or supposed to be running)for x amount of time and the...

    2 Month Old Yeast Starter

Yeah it's an old maccona type jar. I find them good for starters as the lid just gets pushed up while fermenting and you just push it back on afterwards. There's no white ring or film on the surface, only a little crud in the jar left over from fermenting. I haven't had the lid off, so should...

    2 Month Old Yeast Starter

G'day, I have a yeast starter I made about 2 months ago for a brew I didn't end up doing. It has been sitting in the fridge, in a sterile jar, since then. The yeast was a liquid snap pack type which I added to a 1l DME starter. Just wondering if I can turn this old starter into a vibrant...
