Why do SAF packets have "final gravity" or "attenuation" but never both?

I asked a yeast retailer this question, but they weren't able to answer. I know what attenuation is. Final gravity sounds like it might be alcohol tolerance?

Dark Mild - should I use sugar syrup?

Hi Aussies, One of my all time fave beers is Brains Dark Mild, from Cardiff, Wales, where I failed to do well at uni thanks to see above. From what I can gather, Brains Dark and other milds of its ilk use invert sugar at some low percentage. Obviously brewing a low alcohol ale (3-3.5%) you run...

Rehydrating dry yeast: what to look for.

I rehydrate my dry yeast in 30C mineral water before pitching. Sometimes the grains sink v slowly and there's great foaming, other times they sink fast and sit there seemingly dormant, as just happened with 2 packs of MJ French Saison. I'm suspicious this yeast is in poor condition. I got it...

    Toast Ale

I just came across this great environmental initiative Toast Ale - using waste bread to make beer eg from sandwich factories. It's made under licence in several countries now and the recipe is open source. https://www.toastale.com/toast-ale-recipe/ Has anyone had a go? Can anyone suggest why...

    Safety

Caught up with an old brewing friend who lives in Darwin. He told me of a BIABer up there who spilled the whole boiling kettle on himself, spending 3 weeks in hospital with 3rd degree burns. An injury like that will lead to a lifetime of disability. This has given me a hell of a pause for...

    [MOVED] MaxiBIAB and The Calculator

Hi All, Maybe had this in the wrong forum yesterday... I just did my first maxiBIAB on the weekend, aiming for 30L length (=37L manufactured) of 1.055 from a 35L pot and all went well with mash efficiency going up a little despite the higher L:G ratio. My question concerns wrangling this in the...

Fermentis Safale WB06 vs Lalvin Danstar Belle Saison

I recently fermented the same saison style wort in two side by side fermenters in the same conditions using the two yeasts in the thread subject. I started them off at 20C and moved them up a degree whenever I remembered, finishing out after 10 days or so at 26. IN tasting, I find the WB06 gives...

    MaxiBIAB and The Calculator

Hi All, I just did my first maxiBIAB on the weekend, aiming for 30L length (=37L manufactured) of 1.055 from a 35L pot and all went well with mash efficiency going up a little despite the higher L:G ratio. My question concerns wrangling this in the BIAB The Calculator spreadsheet, and in...

BIAB mathematical relationship between mash efficiency and L:G ratio

Having recently discovered maxiBIAB, it occurs to me that the potential yield of a BIAB system can be expressed in terms of: Pot size in L Grain yield potential in points per kilo per litre Mash efficiency Liquor-to-grist ratio OG required This would yield a number of litres that can be...

Make 30L by BIAB in 35L pot - can it be done?

My mate and I have been BIABing with his 35L pot and getting on quite well. I have a crap-load of fermenters and a temp-controlled cupboard that can hold 2 ferms at a time, so the 18L length constraint most software places on this 35L pot has been chapping my thighs a bit. There's a few hours...

Put on a keg at local club

A mate and I are thinking about putting on a keg at our local community club as a fundraiser for the club. Has anyone done this and can offer tips? Is it even legal? We don't own any kegs. Club has 3 taps on always but with standard stuff. Thanks.
