Is A 15l Mash Tun Big Enough For A 20l Batch?

I've been mashing in a 15 litre for years, it's tight, but entirely possible. I do have a 55 litre box shaped cooler for mashing, but find I prefer the cylindrical 15 litre. Best to fly sparge unless you want to do several batch spargings, keep your mash thickness at around 2.2 litres to the...

What's The Deal With James Squire

I agree, and "A bit like a charactature..." would be apt. Cheers

    Fgs Using Darker Malts

Wes I know that potential extract is factored for various malts. But potential extract it isn't the same as attenuation, unless the program can account for this also. I suspect you could be right on the rainwater theory. Cheers

    Fgs Using Darker Malts

Some interesting reading in this article to explain the likely causes of lower attenuation when using darker malts. http://www.scientificsocieties.org/JIB/pap...05-0330-275.pdf I'm also surprised that at 64C you are not getting an even lower FG with your pale lagers considering. Could be your...

Possible Problems From Extended Diacetyl Rest

As the bulk of primary was done, then added fruitiness would probably be minimal. An extended rest will only serve to reduce the lagering time because the clean up would be much more rapid, so proceed as normal would be my suggestion (and hope it's fine) :) Cheers

Conflicting Advice On Re-using Yeast Cake

PP, I had problems with US-56 around early/mid way through last year because of an offensive taste in several all grain brews. Would you describe the offensive taste as being burnt and the aroma somewhat acrid? Cheers

No Wort Aeration, Pitching Dry Yeast Theory

Intentional or not, most of us would be introducing some O2 into our worts simply by the transfer to fermenter. Probably enough for the dry yeast to have an adequate supply for the task. Cheers

    Decoction To Hit Mashout?

I work out the decotion pulls by a simple formula that seems pretty good. (aim temp-start temp)/(boiling temp-start temp-loss temp~10C)*100 So lets say your volume is sitting at 68C (start temp) and you want to hit 75C (aim temp): (75C-68C)/(100C-68C-10C)*100 = 32% So around 32% lifted will...

    Malt Density

I measure all my grains by litres. Works out pretty accurate or at least as accurate as I need to be. I figure on 1kg equaling 1.75 litres uncracked, and with my mill 2.5 litres cracked. Bugger using scales :) Cheers

    Hopburst

Thanks for the replies, I'll give it a bash. Not a real hop head, so I just want to keep it around a BU:GU ratio of 0.7. I was thinking of 95% ale malt and 5% Carahell with a mash temp of 68*C to keep some body there so it doesn't finish too dry. Also will use around 3 grams of Magnesium Suphate...

    Hopburst

Hi, would you people with hopburst experience think it would go OK in a pale ale with a low starting gravity of around 1.045? Or does the style require the backing of malt? Was thinking of only bittering to around 30 IBU. Cheers.

    Mills In Wa

Cheapest I could find in Perth was Reece Plumbing. $9.00 per metre for 1/2 inch, Bunnings were asking $12.00, Galvins wanted $17.00. Talked to a scrap metal merchant at TWOC, he reckons he was getting $6.00 per metre, so I guess it's just expensive now. Ended up getting 10 metres from Reece. Cheers

Seems to me you already knew more than the HBS bloke  . Shame he talked you out of using the malt. Sugars, bah. Now if you could exchange that brew enhancer for 1.5 kg's of liquid malt and some hops........
