    Second BIAB: something went wrong...

Yeah, that occurred to me too, except I filled the urn using a plastic fermenter, which has moulded-in volume marks. Filled the fermenter (it only holds 30L) and tipped it into the urn, rather than losing count of jugfuls, so I'm pretty sure it was 30L... Ah well, I got some drinkable beer...

    Second BIAB: something went wrong...

Cheers for all the responses... Screwtop - I deliberately didn't allow much for boil-off losses as I lost virtually nothing on the previous batch. I haven't really used software to date, but playing around with Brewmate and the BIAB spreadsheet off here, it seems I should have started with 31L...

    Second BIAB: something went wrong...

And I think it was mostly user-error  Did my first BIAB a few weeks ago and it didn't quite go to plan. Ended up being an ok beer, just a bit bland due to being over-diluted. So today I thought I'd have another crack, as the wife's office is having a wee home-brew competition at the...

First BIAB and using old yeast...

MCHammo - the urn is a cheapo Chinese branded thing, 373mm diameter so not as skinny as it could be. It's 2.5kW and boils ok, definitely more vigorous than a simmer but not as full-on as . It's all part of the learning curve though, I imagine I'll adjust my start volume next time and end up...

First BIAB and using old yeast...

Yeah, of all the problems I could have had, they were pretty minor. It was a relatively successful first attempt I guess, I was just surprised at how little boil off there was. Between that and grain and hops soak up, I only lost about 3L.

First BIAB and using old yeast...

So after a dozen or so kits and extract + grain brews I acquired a cheapo 48L urn and a big grain bag and ordered a brown ale all-grain recipe pack, including WLP002 yeast - first time BIAB and first time liquid yeast... Playing with the BIAB beer designer spreadsheet I estimated I needed 30L...

    Sydney,where to stay,where to drink?

Was in Sydney a couple of years ago, The Australian Hotel on the corner of Cumberland & Gloucester in The Rocks neighbourhood had a fine selection of craft brews, and excellent food too. Also, if you go over to Manly the 4 Pines brewery is worth a visit - on the waterfront near the ferry...

New to Lager - has it gone pear-shaped?

Cheers guys, I'll see if there's any further this morning and take another SG reading this evening to see if there's been any movement since raising the temp. As for dry hopping, maybe I'll just keep tasting the samples and make the call when I rack to secondary. Might be a better choice to...

New to Lager - has it gone pear-shaped?

Hi Folks, I brewed up a Mangrove Jacks Munich Lager kit last Tuesday using two packs of Saflager S-23 and 1kg of light DME. I rehydrated the yeast at 20C and pitched into 20C wort, then put into the brewing fridge which took it down to 12C (as recommended on the fermentis website for this...

    Beer Sg 1.114 ?!

A similar beginner's mistake that I've been guilty of in the past when doing kit beers is mixing the extract & sugars with hot water - making sure it's properly mixed in - then adding a load of cold water, stirring properly to mix it all up, then noticing that I'm a bit short of my target...
