    Falling short of target OG

Wow guys... all such good advice and I really appreciate the input everyone has contributed! I think the next thing for me to do is to have another brew day and try and start obtaining my numbers for accurate calculations. I think I'm going to try to re-brew my last beer and just try 10L more...

    Falling short of target OG

Hey Rocker... So as a rule of thumb do you always just go for 10/11L greater than your intended batch size and ignore BeerSmith? Or are you saying this with qualification because that is what BeerSmith spits out and tells you to do? I assume the latter as you have probably configured it...

    Falling short of target OG

...Also I have just noticed in BeerSmith... That if I change my efficiency down to 50% and then look at my estimated OG it does state 1.030. But that is not where I am confused If I then go into the Estimated OG and increase it to match the recipe estimate of 1.050 the grain bill goes up to...

    Falling short of target OG

Hi Rocker1986 Correct, strike volume was 38.8L. Batch size I was aiming for was 22L. However I ended up with more like 24/26L (I put 24L into the fermenter but there was at least another 2L left before I started to get into the dead space under the tap in the kettle) Breakdown of brew process is...

    Falling short of target OG

Hey Yum Beer... thanks for the reply. So I checked my BeerSmith setting as stated in the posts above and I changed my Brew House efficiency but I could not see it make an impact anywhere? Are you suggesting if I change it from 70% down to 50% it will re-calculate the quantities and volumes I...

Starsan In Beer Lines/Froth In Keg/Longevity

Hey Wibble, Have a listen to that link that Newton left above and I have pasted here: http://thebrewingnetwork.com/shows/The-Sunday-Session/The-Sunday-Session-03-19-06-Sanitation-w/-Charlie-Talley Go to the 54 minute mark, that is where Charlie from 5 Star Chemicals comes on. It is an...

Starsan In Beer Lines/Froth In Keg/Longevity

Thanks Newtown... I do not have pH meter but it does not last for more than a few weeks at a time so by the sounds of it I am safe. Appreciate you responding. Ollie

Starsan In Beer Lines/Froth In Keg/Longevity

Hey guys, I have recently begun using Starsan as a sanitising solution and I have a few questions about it that I am hoping someone here will know the answer to... 1. I did a clean out of my beer lines yesterday and I was wondering if there is anything wrong with leaving an unused beer line...

    Wort Chiller Just Ain't Chillin

Hey Burt - so I was not that technical and didn't do a side by side brew but i def agitated the same way and with the same energy. Basically a circular motion in the kettle which almost created a gentle whirlpool.... For the flow rate I tested a quarter turn of the tap and a half turn to figure...

    Wort Chiller Just Ain't Chillin

Hi guys So today was brew day and plumbed up the chiller all good and proper with new fittings from Bunnings. Tested both theories that have been discussed with much enthusiasm on this thread. Theory One: Increased/fast water flow will cool faster. Theory Two: Decreased/slow water flow will...

    Yeast Starter

Yeah what he says! I too would like to know peoples thought on this question from LiquidGold... that is one of the main reasons I have always left wort in my starters as I sometimes find the slurry sticks in the flask and does not all come out into the wort you want to pitch into... So...

    Wort Chiller Just Ain't Chillin

Whoa fellas what about how out of control this thread became overnight....! All I wanted to do was start a chat about chilling some beer... I think some of us could take 5, go chill and have a beer.. (even if it is only 11:45 am). I appreciate everyone's help and opinions but let's keep it...

    Yeast Starter

Hey guys - I have never chilled a starter and pitched just the slurry... I have only ever pitched the entire starter (usually about 1- 1.5L starter that I make on a stir plate). I am really interested to know the benefits of chilling the starter and pitching just the slurry (assumed at room...

    Washed yeast

That is your issue - do it at room temp then pour off the top 2/3'rds after about 45 mins. Then keep the left over. Top up with sterilised but cooled water (room temp) shake and repeat. Then you will be left with the goods.

    Wort Chiller Just Ain't Chillin

    Wort Chiller Just Ain't Chillin

Cheers LB - I think reading everyone's comments it appears my pressure was to high for the water to make contact. I will also do my best to keep it moving a little. Appreciate the feedback.

    Wort Chiller Just Ain't Chillin

Judanero - that birds nest ghetto chiller is intense... I like the idea of having a chiller to run the "in" pipe of water through the esky before it hits the immersion chiller. Also mine is pretty tightly packed/spiraled together so I might try stretching it apart a little as well. Great tip...
