Panicking! - No Signs Of Fermention After 24 Hours

Hi, I've been closely watching this brew for signs of fermentation. A few small clusters of foam were appearing on top of the wort on Wednesday evening. They started out about the size of rice-grains, and over a few days grew to to about a 50-cent piece size. So I assumed that at least...

Hmmm, I guess I better take a reading then.

Panicking! - No Signs Of Fermention After 24 Hours

Ok, so now it's 3.5 days later and it still looks the same?! I would say the average daily temperature is in the low-20s, at night maybe dipping below that. Should I still be not worried? Take some action? thanks, -Hardii??!

Panicking! - No Signs Of Fermention After 24 Hours

Hi, Yesterday morning I brewed "Dave's Belgian Ale" from a recipe in "The Homebrew Survival Guide For Beginners" by Colin Penrose. Everything mostly went to plan, except that it somehow took 4 hours ... but I guess Saturday mornings are like that. Anyway, I took a peek under the blanket this...

My Beer Has A Reasonable Head ... But Then Is Flat

    So on a 3kg of malt-extract brew, does that mean I need 120 grams? That would be 4% by weight. (0.04 * 3000 ~= 120)

My Beer Has A Reasonable Head ... But Then Is Flat

To calculate how much dry malt extract I needed for priming, I followed the recipe and divided that up per bottle. I was making a 1/2 batch (on account of using 2x 5 litre demijohns for fermenting) - so this meant 1.25 cups / 2 ~= 0.6 cups This was divided amongst 10x 500ml bottles ... which we...

My Beer Has A Reasonable Head ... But Then Is Flat

Ah cool, thanks for that info Kelby. Should I move it to the fridge? Currently it's sitting under a blanket in my office. thanks, -Hardii

My Beer Has A Reasonable Head ... But Then Is Flat

Just as a note: I used malt extract for carbination sugar since this was reccomended in "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" ... only on re-reading it, I was supposed to dissolve the malt into boiled water, and then add that to the beer after it had been siphoned into a 2nd fermenter. I don't...

My Beer Has A Reasonable Head ... But Then Is Flat

Hi, My beer (basically malt-extract + hops) has now been bottle conditioning for 10 days. I tried one tonight ... it was nice and clear, and initially had a good head. But after a few seconds, the head fizzled away, and my beer was mostly flat. There was a bit of carbonation, but now a whole...

Hallertau Hop Pellets - Difference Between Boiling & Finishing?

I'm planning on following a recipe from "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" (rev3). It calls for 1.5kg of both malts (so 3k total), and 20 grams of Hallertau hops for boiling. This is to make a 19 litre (5 gallon) batch. It says to use any german wheatbeer yeast, so I have a Safbrew WB-06, which...

Hallertau Hop Pellets - Difference Between Boiling & Finishing?

Greetings, For my 2nd ever brew I'm trying to make a simple wheat beer. The recipe calls for 50% malt, 50% wheat malt, and Hallertau hops for boiling. I duly procured these items from my local brew shop. However when I got home, I noticed that the hop-pellet packs are labelled "Morgan's...

Complete Noob - Need Help With My Hydrometer

It's been fermenting since Sunday lunchtime (2011-01-23) But it's been ~30C inside most days since then, so the yeast should have really had a wriggle on. Hopefully this temperature wont be too detrimental. The bubbling has slowed from one every second to one every minute or so.

Complete Noob - Need Help With My Hydrometer

EDIT: i can't seem to get a cursor in the edit screen (FFox 3.6.13), so I can't edit the actual post. Obviously I included the malt when I boiled the wort, and I meant air temperature, not "ait" temperature.

Complete Noob - Need Help With My Hydrometer

Ok ... I'll start at the beginning. I've been reading "The Complete Joy of Home Brewing" 3rd Edition. In the Beginner's recipes is one titled "HeinieStella European Delight", which I chose because it was one of the most simple. However I only have two 5l glass demijohns, and the Minister of...

Complete Noob - Need Help With My Hydrometer

Yeah, it was my starting gravity. So maybe I'm screwed already. How could I stuff up mixing malt with water !

Complete Noob - Need Help With My Hydrometer

Hi, I'm on my first batch of beer ever - although I've made lots of ginger beer previously. However I'm having problems with reading my hydrometer. Basically I do not understand how to read it. On the upper section is a scale 0 ... 10 ... 20 ... etc. All the books I read specify gravity...
