When & How to start a Wyeast Smack Pack

Oh Christ, I forgot. Disregard previous comment, pitch whatever you want whenever you want.

When & How to start a Wyeast Smack Pack

You've got it backwards mate. You don't need a starter with dry yeast, but you do with liquid yeast (most of the time). That whole "professional brewery pitching rate" line Wyeast spruik is bullcrap. Also, don't put an airlock on your starter, that defeats the purpose, it needs to be oxygenated.

When & How to start a Wyeast Smack Pack

I thought that starters were recommended to be ~1.040 OG to avoid stressing the yeast? Correct me if I'm wrong.

When & How to start a Wyeast Smack Pack

You don't need a stirplate to make a starter, but you get much better results if you do have one. If you don't have a stir plate, give your starter a good shake/swirl every time you walk past it. It won't be as effective as a stirplate but it will be much more effective than just adding the...

    500gm .1gm accurate scales

I actually bought the exact same scale as DU99 there. Works a treat for water chemical additions.

    SPONSORS?

Australia has no law whatsoever protecting free speech, unless you're a politician. People assume we have a right to freedom of speech since we're (technically) a democracy, but it is not the case.

    SPONSORS?

Honestly I'm pretty stunned by people's reaction to this whole change of ownership thing, I mean like any Australian I appreciate a good jab at the USA and its gun-totin' rednecks, but it seems like a bunch of AHB members are dead set seriously anti-American and genuinely object to them being...

    Hop Dealz Australia

Probably get Amarillo the same time he gets crystalised unicorn tears. ******' Amarillo man. If he-who-shall-not-be-named was here he'd give us all a lecture on hop farms withholding stock to increase demand.

    water - a dirty secret?

I wonder, is there anywhere in Australia that does cheap water sample testing? Reading yank forums they seem to be able to get their tap water tested for minerals etc at a lab for reasonable prices.

Dry hopping with a hop bag

I just throw them in the fermenter if I'm dry hopping that way, but in my kegs I use stockings or else it clogs the dip tube. Been there, done that, never again.

Dry hopping with a hop bag

Plain women's stockings from Woolies, cut off the legs and tie into disposable hop bags. I boil them for ~15 minutes just to make sure there's no weird fabric flavours or anything. Works out to something like 50 cents each. No need to try and fish your bag out and clean it and ****, just throw...

    Low Alcohol IPA

There is some discussion on session IPA's in this recent thread. I think that when Mike was talking about adding oats/rye/etc he didn't mean all those things in one beer. Honestly I can't even pretend to know what a Vienna-rye-oat IPA would taste like. It might be interesting in a bad way...

    Sodium Metasulphite For Chloramine Removal

Water reports should be freely available to you, Wolfman. Get in contact with your water supplier and they should be able to provide you with one, they probably have it on the net to download.

    SPONSORS?

Man AHB really loves conspiracy theories. There's a new one every day. US takeover conspiracy, a-certain-banned-user conspiracy, sponsorship banners disappearing conspiracy, now "discussing other forums" conspiracy ... Bloke just said it would be nice if you didn't go on about how great other...

    Little Creatures IPA

I had on of their 500mL bottles of the pale ale last night. God damn they make sweet beer. As in, literally "sweet". Almost cloying. Maybe Hop Hog has spoiled me, but I tend to prefer hoppy beers to be dryer.
