    Chilling your wort

i do this as an extra piece of insurance. If you are storing wort in cubes for extended periods it pays to check that the cube is sealed fairly regularly. I have had two instances where I lost the seal.....one was when a lid cracked and the other was that the lid seal just leaked. I could tell...

    Chilling your wort

I agree with Batz. I have tried them all and I find no chill reasonably convenient particularly in the summer and when you want to brew some stock and have no room in the fermentatorator for another brew. I currently have an immersion chiller that works well in the winter but needs an ice...

    High Gravity Brew.com brewing Systems

Yep they are fairly pricey. I tend to agree with Kingy as far as the cost goes and if are using an STC 1000 you would need a good relay to run that big element. There has been some great Braumeister clones built recently and some detail is on this forum with a bit of a search.

    Brewers Friend Recipe Software

Thanks zeggie, and droid I have been playing with the trial version (free) and it seems that it covers everything but it doesnt let me edit or delete the enormous ingredients lists that come standard. It also doesn't have drop down menus or lists for things like water additions and clearing...

    Brewers Friend Recipe Software

Thanks antiphile, I have it on desktop and Ipad but the Ipad version is as good as breasts on a male bovine. As you said nothing really updates from different computers and Beersmith is so protected I cant seem to be able to put a copy of my BS on the old laptop I want to use in the shed. On...

    Brewers Friend Recipe Software

    High Gravity Brew.com brewing Systems

Oh I see, you are considering the pots and hardware but not buying the full kit. Yes you could use a fixed 2400w element and an over the side element from another separate power source if you wanted. A 240v Chugger is easily available. An STC 1000 would work but will overshoot temps unless you...

    High Gravity Brew.com brewing Systems

The description says that you will need a 30 amp outlet for the 4500w element. Most domestic premises dont have this unless you have a big air con and can tap into that circuit or have a dedicated circuit installed. The other thing in the description is the Chugger is 110 volt; As quoted...

    Calcium in water

Hi Bribie What AJ Delange was suggesting in his posts in the link above is that you need calcium as a necessity in the mash but he suggests that you dont need suphate in those delicate light coloured lagers. His suggestion is to add calcium as calcium chloride in small amounts and forget the...

    Calcium in water

From my observations / tastings over many attempts to improve my German lagers I have noticed a distinct off flavour that was always present in my beers of that style. By adopting AJ's procedure my german lager beers improved dramatically. You know that feeling you get when you have "nailed it"...

    Calcium in water

I have read on our sister forum, quite an extended contribution from AJ Delange where he advised of lowering the Calcium content of brewing water. I took most of it on board and coupled with input and other readings from mabrungard I tried it out on my lagers. My lagers have improved out of...

    Power loss with 2.4KWt element?

It may depend on how your house is wired. The outlet in the laundry may not be a dedicated circuit, it may be in series with other power points in the house and there may be other appliances drawing on that circuit. Take the fuse out that protects that circuit and then go around your outlets...

    CraftBrewer

I can not speak more highly of Anthony, Ross and the staff at Craftbrewer. These guys are on the ball with all enquiries no matter how trivial it may be. A phone call often follows an email and situations are fully explained. This is a pleasant situation which is refreshing in a business climate...

Mash pH high when brewing Wheat beers?

I use 85% Phosphoric acid food grade and without any salt additions for 33 litres of rain or ro water you will need 8 mils of acid {phos} to get a predicted mash PH of 5.0 approx according to EZ water. if you add 8 gramms of calcium chloride EZ water says you need 6 mils of Phos acid. for approx...
