When a H.B. Shop should say "Kits and Bits" only!

Don't always assume what is on the shelf is all they have in stock. My 'local' HBS (it's an hour away, so not overly local) doesn't look overly exciting to an AG brewer when you walk in. It's a Country Brewer franchise with lots of kits on the shelves up one end, a **** load of essences down the...

Help with rinsing yeast - photos included

I got confused the first couple of times too. My process now is to basically just get rid of the trub initially. Let it settle for about 30 min then then pour off all the liquid to another jar and top up with some boiled and cooled water. Let that settle, what's on the bottom will be your yeast...

Favourites hop to use with Cascade

Cascade is a very good natured fellow that plays nicely with just about any hop IMO

    NSW State Comp 2015

Got my sheets yesterday. Scored a 62 for a style I've never brewed before (Cal Common) so happy with that. Main issue was over carbed, but used carb drops instead of exact measure so very happy. I don't brew specifically for comps and only bottle if I end up with more than what I can fit in a...

    Ooold Irish Ale yeast starter

I've done a couple of starters from old picks recently. My yeast calc software needs a date to calculate viability. I just play with the date of manufacture until it gives me 1% viability. If you can enter the viability in directly, just go with 1%.

    Is brewmate gone?

Yeah, that's weird. I was using the web interface, looks like you've got an actual application which I haven't used (well, I used the BrewMate one but not the Brewer's Friend one). Looks like a formulation error in the programming of the Windows application somewhere. The web interface and iOS...

    NSW State Comp 2015

I've never judged, or even attended a comp, but I believe it works as follows Each judge gives a score out of 50, broken up as per below: Aroma - 12 Appearance - 3 Flavour - 20 Mouthfeel - 5 Overall Impression - 10 There's usually two judges per category, so their combined scores will give a...

    Is brewmate gone?

Sure you didn't put in 10g by mistake? I just put in 100g @ 60 min and it spat out 191 IBU's. As I said in another thread, I played with the trial version on the phone for a while before paying the annual subscription. Ran with it solely for my last brew day and was very happy with it. I was...

    Whats In The Glass

Single hopped Ella Pale Ale. First time using Ella. I'm a fan! Probably a bit harsh on the bitterness, but I don't mind that in a hoppy beer. Lovely flavour from the cube addition.

    Brewer's Friend Website ?

I was playing with the free version for a while before going for the annual subscription last week. My brew day last weekend was the first I've run solely off Brewer's Friend. Very happy with it. Still learning all the tools and tricks of the website, only gripe so far is something's are little...

Whats your method for measuring hops?

Yep, cheap set of digital scales measure up to 10kg in 1g increments. Use it for grain and hops.

    NSW State Comp 2015

Thanks to all involved in running the comp this year and congrats to all the winners. Now to wait for the score sheets to see if my Cal Common was the one that scored 62 or 42

BIAB left to drain while bringing to boil

I do this with no dramas. I BIAB in a BCF crab cooker and the bag sits in the insert, which has holes all through it for drainage. When the mash is done I lift the insert out, bag and all, place and old fridge rack on top of the pot and sit the insert back on it to drain. I find most of the wort...

Coopers beer and kits have a slight background bitterness - ?

Perhaps you don't have a very high bitterness threshold. I know I didn't when I started brewing. I was a standard Carlton Draught / Tooheys New drinker. I started trying different beers to get my head around different styles and flavours. One of the first craft beers I tried was 4 Pines Pale...

    Tooheys Pale ale

Tried a six pack the other day. Was anticipating something better than New, but not radically better. I was wrong. It's worse. I would drink New instead of this. It has that ugly New taste with the faintest hint of hops underneath which never quite pushes through, leaving just a weird flavour...

    BIAB recirc help

Hi all, Just after some help on designing a recirc system for my BIAB pot. This is my current setup / procedure. I use a ~40L Crab Cooker pot from BCF. I use the insert that came with it and line that with my BIAB bag. When the mash is finished, I tie off the bag and lift the insert out, bag...

    Bling India Pale Recipe

This thread inspired to contact them, couldn't hurt. Anyway, here's what Ben Kraus responded with: We use Maris Otter as a base malt and then a combination of Melanoidin, Carared, pale crystal malts. Hop wise we have change it a multitude of times, we always include east kent goldings for...
