I love beer and brewing, but..

Does the quality of the ferment affect the quality of the hangover? I'm pretty sure that fusel alcohols cause nasty hangovers, and these are produced in higher quantities if your fermentation temps are too high. Not sure if there is scientific evidence for this though. Personally I get pretty...

Couple of hot days in Melbourne

You can get temp control for less than the cost of a batch of beer mate. Old ****** free fridge of gumtree and a $10 STC-1000 from ebay and $10 worth of parts for an electronics store like Jaycar.

Couple of hot days in Melbourne

Do you mean you mashed at 80c for an hour? You can't boil at 80c unless you are on the top of a mountain, and you want to boil the wort at 100c if possible. Mashing at 80c will not work as you will denature the enzymes that convert the starches in the grist to fermentable sugars. You need to...

Does anyone boil for > 90min?

I do sometimes, especially if I have had a stuck lauter/sparge and need to regain some mash efficiency. In this case I do an extra sparge and longer boil to remove the extra volume to recover some OG points. Did a 3 hour boil on a IIPA I did with reiterative mash and the wife is always saying...

    Small Batch carbing

Guinness is served with a 70/30 mix of N2 and CO2. Not sure exactly what's its pre carbed at but I think it's 1.2 volumes. Could be wrong.

    We are being ripped off

Wise man. I think Australians have themselves to blame for high beer prices. If there weren't so many beer swilling bogan **** knuckles around then the government wouldn't have such an easy excuse for high tax rates on beer. It seems the only way Australian government know how to even try to...

    Vaping

It's such a common story amongst vapers. "I smoked for x years, vaping helped me quit and now I have been smoke free for x years and vape occasionally and feel 10000000x better for it, physically, emotionally and financially." The fact the government is slow slow to react is just beyond a...

    NZ IPA

Yeah, its got a distinctive, pleasant maltiness to it. Not sweet, but a kind of rich toasty,grainy/bready type flavour that is not overpowering. Just strong enough to make it interesting. Its a little like Munich but not as intense. I rate it highly as a base malt and find you can get away...

    NZ IPA

Cost was about Hops ~ $18 Grain ~ $15 Yeast ~ $2 (3rd gen harvested from initial 2 packet pitch of US-05) Probably a few bucks of power to brew it. 20L + of delicious IPA for under $40 is a bargain. Its got a crisp bitterness that fades fairly quickly. Not harsh at all.

    Spunding Valve

I use the KK one for carbonation. The gauge goes to 15, but there is enough throw in the gauge past the 15psi mark to get a pretty good guestimation of the pressure. I just set it till the needle is just shy of the endstop and the beer comes out nicely carbonated. Its probably just a little...

    Stainless Steel Quick connection fittings

I cant help you in regards to that post, but its a good idea to use camlocks rather than the quick connectors where they will be exposed to heat as they are easier to use when hot. The levers on the camlocks are easier to operate and don't get anywhere near as hot. for example mount these to...

What are you brewing in 2017 ?

Another two brews down on the weekend. NZ IPA at the top with Vienna and Wheat malts, hopped with Pacific Jade, Motueka and Nelson Sauvin, fermenting with WLP644 Sacc Trois. Below is a 'Super' Kolsch, with Pilsner and Munich malts, bittered with Perle and a late addition of Saaz, fermenting...

What are you brewing in 2017 ?

I think you can probably get a way with sucrose in a big beer like that. Doing K&K brews, not so much as they have pretty little flavour and stuff all malt to begin with. Depending on the IBU, i would be concerned about adding anything other than malt though. If you are pushing 100IBU+ like a...

    What grain mill to buy

Something like this, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/500gm-CAST-IRON-HAND-OPERATED-CORN-GRAIN-WHEAT-SPICE-GRINDER-CRUSHER-MILL/172340496296?epid=581836108&hash=item28204b47a8:g:GPgAAOSwvzRX17Cd which is a Chinese knockoff of one of these...

    grain storage

The biggest problem i have had with rats lately are their entrails left on the back door step. Thanks cat. No Seriously, thanks!. What bugs are a problem in stored grain? Pantry moth or something different? Rocky Ridge Brewing here in WA just released a hemp ale. Looking forward to giving it...

    What grain mill to buy

That would be one beast of a mill. Does fluting the rollers emulate in a way, the nip angle of a larger roller? Edit: I think its also important to add that you can make good, even great beer with ANY mill. A quality mill will allow you to be more consistent and accurate in your target...

    Certified brewing courses Perth

Is $1/L all a brewpub can clear when they sell beer at $12/pint? I know exercise is high but f*ck me... How much does a viable small to medium bar actually move across the taps/year? I think a lot of the time, its the food that makes the coin. The beer, like you say is an attraction.

    Vaping

Nice one. Hopefully the first of many! Trying to get the missus onto it but she cant take a toke without coughing. I'm sure its psychological. I got her a little Innokin Endura which is a fairly decent little device. I like more clouds personally. I order my juice from the states. The house...

    NZ IPA

You'll get 7.5kg in there. Yeah this is the first time for me with NZ hops and I am really impressed. My main bulk hop supplier is going to get in more NZ varieties and I'll definitely be snapping more up in the future. I'll have to try that. Been meaning to order some Rakau to try out...
