    Yeast Starter Methods

I never smack a Wyeast pack anymore and probably haven't for 3 years or so, I generally make a 2-3L starter then pour 100-150ml of that starter into a small conical flask and put the rest into the fridge. Next I cut open the yeast pack (unsmacked) and pour all of it into a small PET bottle...

Style Of The Week 17/02/10 - California Common (steam Beer)

As I understand it, 2112 though called a lager yeast it technically isn't, its an ale that can be fermented cooler, but having used it a number of times I have found that its worth ramping up the temp (18-20C) towards the end of primary to get good attenuation. I've always enjoyed the results...

Yes definitely, Dr S gave me a Mt Torrens pale to try without any indicators as to what hops were in it, I just couldn't nail the hop? it was delicious, at a guess I would have said B Saaz. Anyway it convinced me to try growing it. BB

    2009 Hop Plantations

This has become obvious to me over the summer, I installed drippers in our front garden last October and its survived a hot summer (so far) better than its ever done before, plants and trees that previouly were visibly stressed despite any amount of hand watering are now not only surviving but...

Only 18% Of Homebrewers Rack To Secondary?

After reading through this thread I don't know what I'm doing wrong , but in nearly 6 years of brewing and racking to secondary I've never had an infection. Alot of nervous brewers out there, in the end just do what works for you. Cheers, BB

Best Coopers Pale Ale Recipe? Need Help Picking Best Ingredients...

Don't pitch the yeast from the can, just the yeast you are culturing from the bottles, if your using 2 stubbies and 600ml of starter wort it may take 24-48 hours before you see any activity, keep twirling the yeast around every time you walk past it. You will see when the yeast is taking off, I...

Liquid Yeast Dormant, Need Help Quick!

IMHO I reckon Brendo is spot on! I follow a near exact process and it removes all the hope and guess work. After brewing I add aprox 1L of the new wort to the yeast wait 4-6 hours until high activity then pitch, been doing this method for about 4 years now and it has never failed and no more...

    2009 Hop Plantations

G'day Leigh, Its a plastic chain lock I've only seen in one size, its about 10mm width and narrows down to 4mm link, but I haven't looked for smaller or larger sizes so I couldn't tell you. The hops hold on fine, I used string the first year I grew hops but switched to the chain lock mainly...

    2009 Hop Plantations

Just thought I'd add a picture of my hiops taken today. From left Hersbrucker (3rd year) Tardif de bourgogne (also 3rd year) and lastly 1st year Chinnok which has totally surprised me as I bought it off Boston last year, brought it home in a sandwitch sized bag and then potted, thinking I'll...

English Ale 50% split of "MO & Wey Vienna only" with thw 1st runnings boiled down to a toffee looking syrup. Hopped with Admiral (bittering) and Northdown for flavour & 1318 London ale III , it has gentle suggestions of dark toffee and caramel and mashed low for a dry finish Really enjoying...

    Mash Paddle 2010

I remember it! Its what I have in my mind everytime I think of this style, the bitterness was prominent but smooth and balanced by a decent amount of malt flavour as well. It was the darker colour that I remember being pleasantly surprised at (my ignorance of course!). A very tasty drop tdh...

    2009 Hop Plantations

The heats been intense, but I have made some shade cloth shields up this year after previous disasters and they have made it through ok, still singed and the windburn alone was enough to inflict some peripheral damage. However, my hersbrucker is flowering well and I may even yet get some...

    Hoepfner Malts

The only Hoepfner malt I tried before they seemed to disappear was the Rauchmalz and it was just awesome! :icon_drool2: After too many disapointments trying to repeat that flavour with Weyermen I have now shelved the idea, believing the only option left was to smoke my own. I never got to...

    Coopers ... Why Bother?

Lovely looking Sparkling there BribieG CPA & CSA are always my pick up against VB and the like, they do seem to suffer when handled poorly though, but to stay its **** and why bother? is a bit of a harsh generalisation. I've had the odd bad one, but in the arena of mass produced beer and given...
