Best Hop varieties for Perth home-grower?

OK Perth brewers, I have a stack of Columbus Hop Rhizomes that need a home urgently, or they will have to go in the bin! After 50 odd years of brewing, my brewing friend has become unable to do AG brewing and can't tend hop plants etc due to his age catching up to him, so he was going to get rid...

    Digi-boil.

Think of it like a business, what would you spend over 10 years on buying booze, verses how much you will save by making your own. For me it was a no-brainer, lets say 1 carton a week @ $55 x 52=$2,860/year x 10 years = $28,600 Lets say it costs about $8 per carton to make our own, $8 x 52 =...

    Cleaning Plastic Fermenters

These 2 products are good and cheap, add a pinch of "Sensitive" laundry detergent (unperfumed), as a wetting agent and good to go. Tricleanium you can get from Bunnings, paint section, usually next to the Sugar Soap, and the Laundry Booster is Sodium Percarbonate.

After many frustrating attempts (since new) to tighten to seal effectively and undo the collection bottle because it won't move, and with the plastic bowing and almost breaking due to the force I have apply to get it to move with the strap spanner supplied, I have been able to at least make it...

MHB said: Point is that sugars in solution are blocking the tannins, maybe not completely but to a very large extent.

I adjust my 77 C sparge water to about 6pH or below which helps to stop tannins extraction according to J.J.Palmer.

A couple of things I suppose, because I'm pushing the limits of my mash tun capacity, I can only get a certain end volume, but if I can replace a bit of the unfermentable adjuncts with base malt, then I can squeeze a bit more volume out the the other end, and the other was a comment from my...

So if that is the case, then putting some Crystal malts in the boiling kettle may be an acceptable practice?

What I'm talking about is 20mins before end of boil for unfermentable materials, like a late hop addition.

I have a brewing friend who has been brewing 50 odd years and he reckons to put them in the kettle (hop spider or bag) about 20mins before flame out to impart a nice rich flavour. I have only just started doing it last few batches and they haven't come through for drinking yet so I can't really...

Well, once again thanks for the offer, but this is not your responsibility as I didn't buy the item from you or anybody in Aus, I got it direct from the manufacturer some time ago before the Guten brand became available in Australia, that's why you don't see any brand name on it, and I have done...

    GUTEN

Thank you for your concern and offer, but I am electrically savy and understand what I have done. I have done a current draw test and see that it draws 11amps, a little over the specs of that fuse, probably why it failed. Best not to run the components at full capacity all the time, IMO it...

Did a brew the other day, all was going well when suddenly lights out in the Guten on ramp up to boil at about 85C, no warning, just complete lights out, no power to controller or pump.....WTF !...... so back up plan enacted, grabbed my newly acquired hang over the side bucket immersion heater...

OK, lets see, yes I have RTFM, and guess what those products are if you care to look under the covers! Super Kill Ethyl Sanitizer Spray : basically ethanol/alcohol solution......hand sanitizer solution of which we are all familiar with now. StellarSan: "Phosphoric Acid based cleaner"...

In any case probably a topic for another thread (pressure fermenting). I'm more interested in this at the moment, has anybody got this happening to their FZ gear? Some smooth areas that come clean no problem, but far more rough surface that isn't cleaning friendly.

So....what is bottling then, if not exactly the same process all be it on a small individual container size!
