Just curious, is the cube plastic? I would have thought it too porous over time and risked oxidation? Just interested 'cos I bottled my recent Barleywine thinking I didn't want to tie a keg up for 12 months of aging but if a cube (of some description) allows oxygen-free aging then I could use...

<sigh> no we didn't. Running off first runnings of the Stout now and just as slow as previous despite sealing the tubing :( BUT, using the last brew's figures obtained from underletting, absolutely nailed the Mash temp this time. Good news is I'm into the Stouts already today - HAPPY ST PATS...

Bottled my Barleywine last night and for interest filled 1x330ml bottle (no priming sugar) and put it in the fridge. Drank it after it had chilled a little. Now remember, this has only been fermenting 12 days, from OG 1090 to somewhere at or a little below 1020 and was only bottled hours...

I'm still not sure how I felt about the piece. I guess it was nice for a change not to see a "which is better" approach HB vs. Commercial, but when you break the story down it sort of peaked on the "were the judges right?" rather than anything really about the quality of the beer.

Make & Model: Mitsubishi MR-189GY Frost Free

177L 2 door fridge freezer. Runs well for a few weeks before it tends to ice up and temperatures rise up. A tinkerer might be able to get it going ... I've got a new fridge so no longer interested in making it work. Would be great as a fermenting fridge even for lagers. Pick up only...

The cheap pond pump I had in the HLT to keep the water moving (and so hopefully get a more even heating) now has a riser tube attached to it. The pump will now sit on the bottom of the tank and draw in cooler water from the bottom and push it up the riser towards the top.

For those at the brew day today, the Barleywine ended up with ~21L @ 1.090 in the fermenter, about 10 points below target and an efficiency of around 63%. Many thanks to those who turned up, especially Adrian and Geoff for redesigning the HLT mixer and Geoff again for the help with the wash up...

Slightly off topic but what the hell, I noticed in an ad in Beer & Brewer that a BoP in Victoria offers to _can_ the beer. I know the ones at Capalaba and Underwood both made noises at times about setting up bottling lines too so someone interested in jumping in to this might want to consider...

The mini-comp is actually Bittter and Pale Ale, not specifically APA. I'll go look for the mail but have to say now I didn't see it which is why no reply.

Along similar lines I use a "Stick Mixer" (Bamix is the expensive brand-name one) - I got mine for <$10 at Pick'n'Pay. Best thing is it comes in two parts so easy to fully submerge the mixing blade to sanatise.
