    Low carbonation lager style

I do all my ales in collapsible water containers which work great with a hand pump, but I fancy trying a lager and I'm not spending loads just for the odd lager and want to avoid bottling if possible. I don't like really gassy stuff any way. Are there any styles of lager that are typically low...

Fresh wort kit as a partial mash

Additionally just brewing a regular extract would cost the same and I'd have two different brews out of it. I think I may start doing that every so often as time is my biggest issue.

Fresh wort kit as a partial mash

I think my thinking is in reverse too - I was trying to think how i can use all grain/partial mash with the limited kit I have and came up with the above.

Fresh wort kit as a partial mash

Fair point. Are they as good a doing your own all grain?

Fresh wort kit as a partial mash

I've been looking at the Craftbrewer fresh wort kits and it struck me that they could be made cheaper by adding 15 - 20 litres of extract & hops to make a partial mash. That would be $50 + c$30 (malt & hops) = $80/2 = $40 per 20L No harder than a typical extract brew day for twice the volume...

Cupboard clearing Extract recipe help please.

I've got the follow in my cupboard and I'm thinking of throwing it all in a boil rather than venture to the shops. What do you think this will come out like, and anything I should change? Yeast is US05 because I've not got any yeast in but can pitch on top of the ale that's fermenting now. It...

Automated Chilling in a No Chill cube

I think maybe straight to fermenter and then into the freezer then may be the best and pitch next day. Since boiling water freezes faster than cold water link, maybe wort will be the same :D

Automated Chilling in a No Chill cube

I'm happy with risks like that. Everything comes at a price. I was trying to think around the lack of control of hop schedules more than anything, so I guess experimentation with cube additions would be as good.

Automated Chilling in a No Chill cube

Ok - I think this idea is a bit too Heath Robinson.

Automated Chilling in a No Chill cube

Advantages I'm after are; boil in the evening, pitch in the morning. And maybe stock pile too. I'd leave the assembly in there until ready to pitch.

Automated Chilling in a No Chill cube

I'm just in the process of thinking through me AG brewing process (not started brewing AG yet) No Chill sounds like a good idea, but I was thinking if it could be chilled in the cube quickly would that improve things like hop schedule planning and maybe remove some of the real or imagined...

Anyone here Mash In A Bag?

Unfortunately it's the family Esky. No way I'll get away with modding it! I also want to keep my options open as I've not tried AG yet.

Anyone here Mash In A Bag?

Great idea. Heat loss should be very low I think, especially if I poor near boiling water in first (I'll maybe poor into an inner container to avoid harming the Esky)

Anyone here Mash In A Bag?

I've been reading on other sites about using a large Esky and a large sheet of voile to cover the inside to mash with as part of a normal BIAB. This sound attractive to me as (I think) I could use a full volume in the Esky as if it's a large 40L pot, then hoist the grain out, and transfer to...

    Maxi BIAB vs Esky mash

If I chill it will be narly DIY job :D I reckon that can be done easily for peanuts. Aquarium pump - ice in Esky. Long copper pipe and a couple of soldered joints.

    Maxi BIAB vs Esky mash

Interesting - thanks. I've not decided on no chill vs chill yet - that's the next thing to decide. All my brews go into collapsible water containers of 20L exactly, and i'd rather not bother with bottles at all.

    Maxi BIAB vs Esky mash

I'm wanting to try out all grain shortly - only done about 8 extract brews but I want to progress quickly. BIAB seems like the go - I have a 19 Big W stock pot so would be looking at Maxi BIAB? One thing though which I've not found an answer to - wouldn't it be easier to use a bag in an Esky...

How much should I trust my brewing software? (Brewtarget)

Brewery show it as an IPA, although I thought it was American PA. Never tried it myself. Ian, I started with your spreadsheet and found it very helpful - I only moved to Brewtarget because I use Linux and the spreadsheet software errors on the macros. I'll go back to using it again through a...

How much should I trust my brewing software? (Brewtarget)

I've been using it for a few brews and it's been great. Now I want to brew St Austell Proper Job - a UK American PA. I've seen a number of recipes calling for vast hop schedules, and when i put it in Brew target the IBU is 87, and the FG is 1022 both of which are too high for style according...

Kegged beer tastes MUCH better than bottled from the same batch

I got one from BCF named Trojan! It was cheap but not the cheapest. It works ok, but does leak a bit from the centre of the tap - more of seep than a leap, but it's only done 3 bags. I did clean it with Napisan which may have dried the seals a bit. I had to turn the tap tube around to get a...
