What do you think of this SmAsH?

I made this up and tried it today. The recipe was the same as posted, with the addition of 250g Cara-pils and only 30g dry hopped for 5 days. (I got a bit scared of too much hop aroma) I hit the numbers dead on, so it's around the 5% ABV mark bottled. And dam it's freakn beautifu!! The only...

What do you think of this SmAsH?

I think FWH gives a smoother bitterness than a 60 min addition.

What do you think of this SmAsH?

That was the idea, I've never used Simcoe before so I wanted to see what it was like without going over the top. Thanks for the feedback!

What do you think of this SmAsH?

Not a bad idea. Upping the 20 min addition to 40g brings it back to 30 IBU's.

What do you think of this SmAsH?

Hi guys, I'm having a crack at my first smash brew using Maris Otter and Simcoe. It's something different from what's usually done and I've come up with the following recipe: 5.5kg Maris Otter (I was also tossing up adding 250g Carapils which I have lying around...) 15g Simcoe @ 60 15g Simcoe...

How long can a batch sit in a primary fermenter for

I always leave my ales in the primary for a minimum of 12 to 14 days. It can be a few days extra if work gets in the way so I dont think you'll have an issue at all.

Time Efficient Brewing (or How To Brew When You Have Kids)

Two words... Day Care!! May not work if you're not a shift worker though.... I have a 2 yr old and 4 yr old twins who are very interested and want to help and watch but lose interest quickly. Now its getting warmer, I just get them outside to play while I brew in the shed keeping half an eye...

How Not To Homebrew - Part 2. Learning From My Mistakes!

Hi mate, top idea you've hit on there! One question, why do you boil your hop sock when you're putting it into boiling wort anyway?

    Forgot to sanitise syphon hose

Wow, it goes to show how anal we've become! It should be right. After its last use it got a PSR wash and rinse, then another one before this brew. I was tossing up whether or not to toss the first 5 litres and clean the hose again and the bucket, but thought I'd just risk it and see. I still had...

    Forgot to sanitise syphon hose

Lol... Too used to sterilising baby bottles I think! But I fixed my typo thanks! I often just rinse bottles with hot water too and never had any issues. Hopefully thats the case with this dam hose... My usual process is to fill about 1/3 of the hose with starsan and lift each end higher than...

    Forgot to sanitise syphon hose

Hi guys, just wondering if you all sanitise your syphon hoses before use? I'm guessing the answer is yes... I started syphoning into my batch priming bucket and got to about 5 litres before I realised I forgot the bloody fill it with Starsan as I usually do! I did fill it with PSR and...

    De-chlorination substance

I should probably just stop being impatient and duck into the shop during the week and pick up some campden tabs.

    De-chlorination substance

Hi mate, I just found that too. It seems to be Sodium Thiosulfate and EDTA Tetrasodium salt.

    De-chlorination substance

Hi guys, I know Campden tablets are good to remove chlorine and chloramine from tap water. But I dont have any on hand... I do have API brand Tap Water Conditioner for use in fish tanks to remove these chemicals. Has anyone used this in their brew water or know if its safe to use? It doesnt have...

    Ink Bird Controllers

Another vote for the 310T here. I've used it on my first brew for a week now and have had no problems. It controls the temp well, it only used the cooling point initially to bring the wort down from 20 to 19 degrees. I'm about to cold crash today so I'll see how it goes down to 2 degrees. The...

Pot only gets up to 95C with the lid off

I just got a 20L pot from Big W plus a digital thermometer. I just did a test boil to see how long it took etc and to test the thermometer. The water was at a good boil but the thermometer registered 97.1 degrees. I was thinking ah well 3 degrees I can work with, until I read this and looked at...
