    Getting great choc flavour

I put down my first porter for the winter season with cacao nibs. the hydro sample showed good signs of chocolate for me.

    New brew...

I agree with Moad. My advice would be to start with a coopers sparkling kit and a can of wheat extract and ferment it with US05 yeast(From Dr Smurto's recipe, but minus the grain and hops additions). Ensure your sanitation is good, and if you can control the temperature then keep it at 18...

    Kit with no kilo

I've done this a few times for a light beer, using the coopers Mexican Cerveza can. It makes an acceptable drink if your expectations are in the right place. As others have said, add some maltodextrin and finishing hops and it should serve the purpose.

    Stone & Wood Pacific Ale

For what it's worth I think your fermentation is going fine given the circumstance. I'd suggest that A - you've slightly under pitched for a higher gravity beer,( a good rule of thumb is that a SG over 1.050 you should pitch 2 packets, ) B - you didn't re hydrate the yeast and C - SO4 is a...

    Brown Porter - Windsor / Nottingham / S-04?

Nottingham is very reliable and clean as far as a esters go. I've recent bottle my first dark ale for the winter to come with the second waiting to be bottled and both used Nottingham. It's my go to yeast until I actually want to experiment with a yeast strain. I've got no experience with...

    First brew a success!

Just a tip about priming, if you learn to bulk prime, then you can adjust the amount very easily in small increments, instead if 1,2, or 3 carb drops. This way you can learn reproduce your preferred carbonation levels in all your beers. I found that the carbonation drops were not giving me...

    Stone & Wood Pacific Ale

Yep that's right. If your aiming for around 5% in 23L then that's what you need. I often use one 'can' of liquid extract and then use dry extract to make up the difference. I do this because When doing my boil for the hops I need roughly 800g of dry extract ( or 1000g of liquid) to get the...

    Stone & Wood Pacific Ale

I did a similar recipe not so long ago (1 week bottle conditioning so far) I had no such issues. My only thought so far is to ask, did you get your water from a garden hose, or different source to normal. I can tell you ( luckily I'VE not done it) water from a garden hose can kill any...

The need to just let things sit.

I pitch my yeast, then check it one day later for activity, then at 1 week(while dry hopping) then at 2 weeks ( cold crashing) then at 3 weeks (bottling). I believe I have my technique down enough to let the brew do its thing. it makes brewing more relaxing.

Very cloudy after reaching final gravity..

as for your original post, it seems you have the equipment, so wait a few days and then cold crash at 0 or very close to, for at least 3-4 days( I usually do a week). then Rack onto your priming sugar and bottle. my general method is 14 days in primary, cold crash for a week then bottle Your...

First ever brew, need cider advice

A fair bit has already been said so I may repeat some of it. Firstly My personal experience with the black rock cider kit was not so good. If your going to ferment this kit, I'd recommend putting a few extra litres of apple juice in with it(4 - 6), at a minimum, for extra flavour. forget the...

    Carbonating AG versus Extract

it does seem like you are under priming. your 1.6g per 375ml bottle equates to 4.2g/L. I use about 5.5g/L at the moment(bulk priming method, in extract brews). Super stock is using up to 8g/L(3g per 375ml bottle) so I'd suggest increasing your prime sugar amount. beaten by Yum......

    First time home brewer

Yeah, twice. My second version is probably my best beer so far. I'll be doing it regularly for sure, along with Dr smurtos golden ale. Have you got your recipe yet?

Well, you gotta do it at some point. So why not now? It's a good one to try. Just know your procedure. Have you steeped grains and done hops additions before? Hop hog has alot of hops.

    Hop Hog Extract Recipe

Hi guys. My second attach at this seems to be a winner with my friends (and me). I'm loving the mix of hops and the balance of IBU's(46.9) vs sweetness. May not be exact clone but a worthy beer none the less. My recipe was post number 128. my hops schedule was as follows, "7g simcoe @ 60...

    First time home brewer

Go get yourself a Hop Hog. It's cloudy! It a damn fine beer. I've used finings once as it came with a kit I bought. I don't rate it. ( not saying it doesn't work, just one more step, and more effort). If I want clean looking beer I use Nottingham yeast and cold crash. My point being...

    First time home brewer

My recommendation would be a Dr Smurto's Goldem Ale, but with a mix of Citra and Simcoe. It been great for me so far. Ian_2005 has already given the base recipe, just sustitute the 5 minute for simcoe and dry hop with equal part simcoe and citra. My recipe is all extract. If your interested...

    Secondary or Bottle?

I agree with grott, 2 weeks in the primary then bottle for at least 3 weeks, 4 or more is preferable. if you can't wait that long, at least do 2 weeks in the primary, then bottle, and wait as long as you can before trying. The benifit to trying the beer early i guess ( 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks...
