Malt prices to increase due to poor malt barley harvest

Malt grade barley has a lower protein content than other varieties around 12%. Any barley that doesn't meet malting quality specifications gets regarded as food or feed grade. High protein levels in beer are not good for various reasons such as off flavours and haze.

Malt prices to increase due to poor malt barley harvest

Reports indicate that there is a lower intake of malt grade barley from farmers than previously anticipated due to the heat wave during the last part the season. Most barley received does not meet specifications and is being regarded as feed barley. My guess is that we can expect an increase in...

Can I lower abv after fermentation

IBUs are a measure of the concentration of isomerized alpha acids in a litre of beer. The unit of measure being mg/l (mg isomerized alpha acids/ litre of beer) so keeping the mg the same but increasing the volume would reduce the IBUs

Craft Beer Industry Concerns - what is and isn't craft beer

Craft beer is more about the implied culture and economics around the production of beer. It's about the individual or group of individuals who take their passion to make good beer and turn it into an independent business. The small man giving it a go. It's about producing a beer for the local...

Dedicated Grainfather Guide, Problems and Solutions Thread

I find the sparges to be quite quick, and my extract efficiency is lower compared to using a 3v system with a mash/lauter tun where recommendations are roughly 30-60 mins. Any other GF users have this issue as well.

Blending beer with wine or mead

These Brewers http://propolisbrewing.com/ale.html in Washington are using different herbs and plants in their beer. Had a chance to sample some at a farmers market in Seattle a while back. Definitely an acquired taste. Could be that that's how beer taste before hops was being used as a...

    Terrorist Killings in Paris

There's a school of thought that ISIL taking credit for this event among many others is a tactic to get more and more people to turn against Muslims forcing them them to be ostracised and joining their ranks creating the divided world they want.

    Ibd Brewing Course

I took the GCB on Tuesday the 10th of November. Based on the questions asked you need to cover all chapters, know all formulas and note important figures. It's very comprehensive. A couple of questions asked had choices that all seemed reasonable. Bring a calculator which many candidates did...

    Challenger hops not growing well

I had them in the soil last season. The soil is acidic dark clay. I decided to put them in a raised bed and transferred the rhizomes in early spring. Growth behaviour seems to be the same as it was in the soil so far. Cascade is taking off really well.

    Conditioning Temps and off flavours

Your maturation phase is important in getting rid of green beer flavours and to prevent off flavours. Keep you beer at a lower temperature than your fermentation temperature and try keep it stable. The yeast is absorbing unwanted byproducts and need to be kept comfortable while doing this. Also...

    Challenger hops not growing well

Are the goldings of the same stock? I.e. Did you get them from same supplier at the same time? Just wondering if there might be some variation based on where they came from. Both my cascade and challenger are from same supplier who grows them I his garden,
