    Refractometer usage

not saying that refractometer is better. Just giving a reason for the discrepancy. At least a hydrometer is more straight forward to use.

    Refractometer usage

There is a correction factor that needs to be determined for your refractometer. This is done by taking numerous readings for unfermented wort with the refractometer and hydrometer and plugging them into a spreadsheet. This may be why you got a reading of 1.006 compared to a hydrometer...

    Counter Flow v Plate Chiller?

I've used both a counterflow and plate chiller and decided to stick with the plate chiller. Reasons for sticking with the plate chiller are: I haven't had an infection in my beer from using a plate chiller More compact and larger heat exchange surface area:size compare to a counterflow heat...

    Different wort aeration kits

I wonder how much aeration would improve compared to using an air pump by using a spray adaptor like one of these. https://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Brewing-BE510-Siphon-Aerator/dp/B00ODSS5J8

Just when I thought I'd made every mistake possible.......

I was preoccupied my young boys on brew day and forgot to sanitise the fermenter. It was a Belgian yeast I was using but realised that this funk I was tasting was not right 3 weeks later after bottling entire batch.

How to - Can starter wort

This is a great idea as we don't have yeast starters available commercially as far as I know. Northern brewer in the US sells a canned version. http://www.northernbrewer.com/fast-pitch-canned-wort-4-pack

Share holder in Hopsters Co-op Brewery Sydney for $250.

Brew dog in the UK raised capital for their expansion in a similar way through crowd funding. Shareholders don't have access to brewing on their brew houses but can attend the Agm and special event. It seems to have worked for them. I am guessing some of their crazy stunts and award winning...

What do you use to increase temps of your FV safely? heat belt? light?

I use a fermentation chamber and raise the ambient temperature gradually on my STC. My feeling is that the heat belt would cause some harm to the yeast and other components in the beer/wort. The heat would cause a convection current and allow more beer/work to come into contact with the "hot"...

    Draft pouring issues

I've also had more foaming issues with my heavier beers(higher FG) I think the foaming might be a result of the dextrins remaining in the beer from the speciality malts.

    Where do you buy..

Try Knauf EPS insulation boards. Bunnings sell 30mm thick sheets for $12 each. They're a bit sturdier than ordinary polystyrene sheets and easy to cut with a knife. No mess. Foil board is also good. May need to order them.

Craft Beer Industry Concerns - what is and isn't craft beer

One could argue that the philosophy of manufacturers of mass produced beer also have the philosophy of making quality beer that uses the best ingredients albeit for the consumer who only knows or prefers pale fizzy lagers. After all if they failed in making a quality product they wouldn't be...

Craft Beer Industry Concerns - what is and isn't craft beer

To try and draw a parallel. Is cheese made on a small scale by an independent business and sold at a farmers market or at a local outlet not considered artisan/craft cheese? If that same cheese was mass produced at a large factory it wouldn't be considered craft/ artisan cheese .can the same not...

Craft Beer Industry Concerns - what is and isn't craft beer

Not all businesses want to be bought out by larger multinational breweries but want to keep it in the family and remain independent. Also not all businesses want to expand to the point of being another James Squire. Depends on the business model. Being small doesn't mean you will be...

Ball lock or pin lock keg

Hard to find second hand ball lock kegs. So if you're on a budget then pin lock would be best option. That said posts aren't easy to come by should one break or need replacing. You could upgrade to ball lock fittings when the pin lock post needs replacing. Also pin lock kegs don't have the...

An update; the challenger hop plant is now starting to grow. Definitely not as vigorously as its cascade neighbour which is extending its bines about 20cm a day

    BrewMonitor project

I agree with you Klangers. It's one of the methods some production breweries monitor the gravity.
