    Alternative To Grain Mill

You can get the victoria/carona style mill for $60- $90. Thats what i use. I saw a video of someone grinding with an electric coffee grinder, not sue how good this is. If I were you I would be buying a recipe at a time preground from your LHBS (if its a decent one) then buy a proper mill when...

Learn Me Up On Kit Twang

Do it! get into AG Honestly the beer is awesome, it ends up cheaper (they way I think of it the more I drink the more I pay off my capital and save), but most importantly nothing beats the fun of AG brew day.

Learn Me Up On Kit Twang

Do you have any friends who AG brew? Have a taste of theirs and see what we are talking about. It's not that kits are bad, it's that AG can be substantially better. If AG brewing interests you, buy a fresh wort kit which will taste like an AG beer with none of the fun.

How Long To Boil To "sterilize" It ?

I apologise for spreading mis information. I guess I was told it by someone and it seemed plausable, especially given the high temperatures required to make candy sugar and never measured it for myself.... glad to be corrected.

How Long To Boil To "sterilize" It ?

What are you brewing with no bittering hops? Just bringing it to the boil should be enough. Wort boils at around 105C and it will be well over 70 C for a few hours. If something can survive that then you should be more impressed then angry with it for ruining your beer. But better to be safe and...

What Is Your Method Of Siphoning?

I installed a tap the other day, it was a really fun project and thank f**k I don't have to siphon any more, well worth it!

    19 Litres?

Or you can weigh an empty keg and then fill it and put it back on the scales. Which ever method floats your boat.

Transferring Beer From Secondary To Keg

Several ways to syphon without putting your gob on the tube. 1) put another tube on the tube, suck through that and pull it off when you get the syphon started. 2) sanitize hands, put syphon tube almost completely into the cube, place thumb over end of tube, pull tube out and below the level of...

    Homebrew Disaster!

30 mins was from the original post I was replying to... I'm lucky to get it to 35 after 45 mins... and then if you sit it in the fridge for over 12 hrs without a yeast your essentially taking the risks of no chill without the awesomeness of pasteurization.

    Homebrew Disaster!

The big problem with no chill is not that problems are occuring, it is that they are easily detectable when they happen. I'm moving from chill to no chill because I believe it is more sanitary. The 30 mins of wort below pasteurisation temperature, semi exposed through my understanding of...

    After Something New

Yep grain mill is definately the most over priced piece of brewing gear, how can half a kilo of steel shapped into 3 pieces be worth so much. I just dont get it

    Homebrew Disaster!

One other point which hasn't been raised. When you've filled your cube do you leave it on each side for a few minutes so any tiny air space gets a nice dose of boiling wort? Doubt it would cause two infections if you didn't but i guess its possible.

    No Bubbles

It should be pretty good after two weeks, the extra 4 wont make that much difference (it will improve gradually). But this is why you need to put another brew down on the weekend, the waits not so bad once there's homebrew in the fridge :drinks:

    No Bubbles

Hi, Ale yeast seems the most likely option, but another possibility is its finished fermenting. A lager yeast at 22 can finish fermenting in a day or two. A hydrometer reading will tell you wants happening. If you don't have one of those get one, but if you need to know straight away take a...

    After Something New

With the grain you do have to prepare for your LHBS guy complaining that he never sees you and you dont love him any more. Also if you've ever had any problems with rats you need to be super careful, once they find grain theyll chew through a plastic container to get to it.

    After Something New

I feel good having changed someones brewing life today :D Prices from craftbrewer - bulk buys are really worth it if you can get into it. Cut and paste didn't work, follow the link :) http://www.craftbrewer.com.au/shop/details.asp?PID=869

    After Something New

All my grain is confined to two large storage containers that stack nicely on top of each other. So end of the day doesn't take up all that much space. Try to get your self on the next bulk grain buy here. You can get 50kg of your base malts for between $70 and 100 depending on the type you get...

    After Something New

I'd buy a mill and a bit of grain if you have the space. It's lovely feeling to know you can brew when ever you want and not have to rely on the homebrew shop, just need to go down to the storeroom. Do you have kegs or are you still bottling? a simple kegging systems a good way to go but that...

Why Did You Start Brewing? Can You Answer These Questions?

I think you will find saving money is a reaccuring theme and probably should have included it in the poll. 1) What inspired you to start home-brewing? Why do you continue to home-brew? Initially to save money. Also it seemed a fun and productive hobby I could share with my flatmate. I...
