    Lagering necessary when extract brewing?

Hi All, I usually brew with a mate, and we throw down one Ag and one Kit brew (keeps the supplies going!). We are doing Lagers this weekend one dunkel (AG) and one Helles (extract). I have the facility to lager one fermenter easily (move it to the from the fermentation-fridge to the...

    Brews Lacking Body

They were new recipes. I calibrated at a couple different temps. with both an aquarium thermometer and a cheapo one. I have never tested my PH, i wouldnt know what to do or look for.

    Brews Lacking Body

For the Ales, just 1 pitch, wyeast, no starter. for lagers, i generally do 1 - 3L depending on what it is. The cube is usually at the right temp, pack is already smacked, and i drop it in.

    Brews Lacking Body

This could be it!! How much of a difference would it make? I had thought that they were very similar and interchangeable. It wouldnt it explain the lagers that have come out a little light though? Many/most recipies call for a combo of pilsner and munich/vienna. Maybe that was just a coincidence.

    Brews Lacking Body

I mash in an esky. I calibrated the thermometer before installing it and checked it lat time and it was bang on. Could it be anything else? the way things are cleaned? water quality?

    Brews Lacking Body

wbosher: its a problem that has been around for a while (perhaps lingered since i have been AG-ing). The few brews before that i overshot the SG a lot (combination of underestimating efficiency and crushing grain a little thin) and they ended up coming out very nice (body wise) although the...

    Brews Lacking Body

Hi All, The last few brews have all come out lacking a bit of body/flavour. I was hoping someone could give me a hand or a few hints as to why. I single infusion batch. The last few brews (bright ale, pale ale and dark lager) have all come out slightly thin tasting. They have all been done at...

    Starsan Melbourne

Greensborough HB has something similar which is no rinse at pretty much the same dilution as star-san. The only thing though is that it ends up being slightly more expensive at the end of the day. not much though.

    Aldi Liquor

i have tried many of the aldi varieties. Some arent too bad. I recommend the 'shipstones crew' beer from aldi. I reckon its fantastic value for $30. I would still buy it if it were crown lager prices. Most times i am there i pick a slab (i think you northerners say 'carton') Oh and i have...

    Specs For A Fermenter

You want to use an esky as a fermenter? for kit brews or all-grain? I guess this is possible. i doubt the esky lid is very airtight anyway, so i don't perhaps see the need for the airlock, or i could be wrong, maybe they are. Mine isn't. If you plan on doing all-grain I would just buy a...

    Am I Overpitching Belgian Yeast?

DazDog not that low, although i have before. Depending on what it is: 9 - 12

    Am I Overpitching Belgian Yeast?

I am probably going to get 100 people telling me why this is wrong. but i just pitch around 1L for everything. If i am brewing a 10% Lager i may do 2- 3L but that is rare. I find it works for almost everything. Fine for all my regular lagers and i find its enough to get things going with a big...

    Heat Belt Vs Heat Pad?

i use a heat pad and an old computer Fan in a brew fridge. I get even temperatures throughout the fridge (usually have 2 fermenters in there on the go) and its very easy to set up.

    Hop Isomerisation Temperatures

I have just been running through the numbers (playing with half-life). If i put all of those numbers in a spreadsheet for example, and then take the mean temperature over the time taken from boil-out to 80C (anything less than that on a 0-30m boil is not likely to be more than a couple of IBU)...

    Hop Isomerisation Temperatures

So from all that then, i can assume that it is half as effective at 90c and 1/4 at 80 1/8 at 70 and then small/negligible after that. Or do i have it wrong?

    Hop Isomerisation Temperatures

Very interesting Malted. However, Given that we know all of the above factors that you mentioned. Following the Arrhenius equation, could some smart cookie not plot a line after making some assumptions such as the gravity is 1050, and it took 20 minutes to cool down to 80c. (i would be happy...

    Hop Isomerisation Temperatures

Now, I know there has been a lot said about Hop Isomerisation times. Apologies if this topic has come up many times. But i am wondering if anyone has a graph or something like that showing the average isomerisation amount in relation to the temperature. I have been no chilling for some time and...

    Homebrew Tragedy! [with Pics]

This has made me think about being much more careful as well. I have never had a bottle explode. But there is always a first. Yesterday i bulk primed a 22L cider with 200 grams dextrose, now i am thinking that may have been too much. I went by what i read online, but it is certainly more than...

    Malthouse Tour

I was hoping this was going to be on the weekend. I may have to take a look at my ADO count to see if i can take one or half off. Days off for me around the spring carnival are precious. losp
