    RecipeDB - BullsHead Summer Saison

2 weeks into the ferment for my first Saison. I've used Tony's recipe but souped it up to OG 1056. I'm a glutton for punishment so I've used WY3724 as per Tony's recommendation. Got a healthy pitch after doing a 2 step starter and oxygenated 1l/min pure O2 for 90 seconds (should be about 10ppm)...

Knurling on a Mashmaster Mini Mill

I have milled once with my new mill with the (double) fluted rollers. I received some advice from Frank (see post #220 in this thread) regarding crush size and he recommended a 0.6mm gap (as a start) which seemed a tad fine for my set-up (Grandfather - prone to stuck fly sparges with fine...

There was a black rubber washer and a white rubber washer in the kit that needs to be inserted into the cold water-in hose tap fitting so that it will seal properly. Mine leaked pretty badly until I found the extra washer. Probably worth checking that you have inserted them or that they...

New to home brewing and a little confused

Remember also TonyF there is a temperature correction for hydrometers. Most are calibrated to read true at 20c, it should be written somewhere on it. If your cooled boiled water was at a signicantly different temp then you could be a few points out. http://www.captainbrew.com has lots of...

Leland mini CO2 bulb cartridge regulators

Oh Crap. Thanks Black N Tan for the info. No more posting from me until I know what I'm talking about.

Leland mini CO2 bulb cartridge regulators

Technobabble the paintball adapter is definitely not adjustable. I like your idea of a ghetto adapter for the adapter but I suspect it would be pretty tricky to get it right. I'll have a play around with it this weekend. But anyway I've ordered this adapter which is adjustable and is said to...

Leland mini CO2 bulb cartridge regulators

SODA STREAM BOTTLES I'm sorry brewers but I have lead you astray. DJ L3ThAL is right to be circumspect. The thread for the included adapter (for paintball cartridges DJ says) does fit the top of a Sodastream bottle but it is too deep to press the release valve on the top. Therefore no gas...

The adapter came with the reg as did a couple of other adapters! Good value. Yep, keep those bottles tucked away.

Leland mini CO2 bulb cartridge regulators

CO2 Cartridge regulator arrived in the post today. Sodastream adapter is aluminium rather than steel but fits fine. Will report back after I try to carb up a 9.5L Corny with this set up. Will need a hose rather than hanging the soda stream off the disconnect. The reg itself looks to be a...

    us05, two packs?

After much Professorial introspection and consultation of the trub at the bottom of yesterday's brew, I have determined a pantless brewing yeast pitching rate correction factor. The recommended pitch rate for an Ale = 0.75 millions cells/ ml wort/degree Plato - R(n-2)/2*(SWMBO)3 Where R...

Leland mini CO2 bulb cartridge regulators

Question from a Keg Virgin: I have inherited a 9.5L Corny keg. I have just bought the reg. on Ebay to which this post refers. Is it possible to fully carbonate a 9.5L keg using this system and maintaining pressure with 16g cartridges, say at 20 PSI, for a week? Or are these kegs only for...

    us05, two packs?

US-05 is a very clean yeast. I think there would be more problems with underpitching than over pitching. Many brewers have had no problems with pitching directly onto a massive US-05 yeast cake. 1g/l of US-05 is quoted as a common pitch rate for those who buy their US- 05 yeast in 500g...

I dissasembe the filter with every clean. (GF purchased December, so probably latest version). Probably overkill, but I have found hop matter inside after the rinse cycle. Haven't had any problems with damage to the silicone joiner but I can see it could be damaged with repeated assembly...

    Mangrove Jacks new strains

Currently have a Belgian Witbier in the fermenter for which I used the MJ Belgian Whit M21. It took off pretty well but after 72 hrs the yeast dropped out. OG 1045 and have been stuck at 1020, aiming for 1010. Tried increasing temp from 18 to 21 degrees and swirling the FV but hasn't done...

Knurling on a Mashmaster Mini Mill

I emailed Frank at MashMaster for some advice about how to measure the mill gap and what he would recommend as a starting point for an ideal crush. 0.6mm seems pretty narrow but I guess the fluted rollers are completely different to the knurled rollers. I was very impressed with the detail in...

Bottle conditioning with yeast or new wort

Thanks for the advice lads. Glad to hear I don't need to make bottling any more complicated. Cheers.

Bottle conditioning with yeast or new wort

Question from a newbie - I have recently added a fermenting fridge to my brewing set-up and it has been awesome to be able to dial in fermenting temp, especially during the hot summer. I was all raring to go to crash chill my current ale brew (for clarity) when I read on Beersmith Blog today...

Good point Wadey. Forgot to do this during cleanup on the weekend. Judging by the number of small grain particles that made it through the pump and sat on top of the mash plate when recirculating there is very likely to be some left in the ball valve.
