    Free Beer And Mates

At my daughters 21st in Jan this year I had 2 kegs of DSGA on tap, and big heaps of factory acid in eskies. My nephews and other young blokes had the choice to drink pretty well anything free, but chose to drain my 2 kegs first. My mates love it, but are too lazy to make their own, so i dont...

    Wtb: Crown 40l Urn (perth)

I've done about 40 brews with my 40L birko exposed element unit, no probs. As Tavas just said, make sure you clean the element each time, and just use a cake rack etc to keep the bag off of the element. I use temp control on mine while mashing - works a treat.

    Wort Aeration Using Compressor.

Howdy to everyone. After having a stuck fermentation with my last stout, I wanted to make sure I aerate the wort better in my next one. Is there any reason I cant use my workshop compressor, dial it down and run the air through a small valve to limit flow so that its not too violent with air...

    Why All Grain?

Better tasting beer, and the flexibility to do more. Plus the feel of doing it more as a fully natural additive free beer. The other big thing in improving brewing i reckon, is going to kegging. That really changes home brew to craft beer if you are a patient brewer.

Help Wanted From Birko Urn Owner

If it is an exposed element, give the element a really good clean and get to as much of the element as you can. It is important that the heat inside the element gets out into the fluid quickly, so that the element doesnt build up too much heat internally. If the element is allowed to develop...

    Spent Grains Dog Biscuits

Did a batch of dog biscuits last night, dead easy, used the recipe from BYO magazine. The dog loves them, we'll give them as treats only, not as normal food. 1 Litre of squeeze dried spent grain. 2 Cups plain flour. 2 Eggs. 1 cup peanut paste. Blended together with a rubber spatula, then laid...

Whats Your Most Useful Brewing Gadget?

4 Channel simultaneous heating and cooling controller (home made). Controls fridge, fermenting freezer, mash temp with preset heat start time, and has a heating output to dry malt and hops. works a treat, next step is to add some step mash features to the mash part. Its probably a bit more than...

    Urn For Biab

I use 40L birko with exposed element, and use a cake dack style thing to keep the bag off. If you go this way, just remember to clean the element each time, and you'll have no probs. As others have said, you get what you pay for, steer away from chinese electrical stuff.

    Biab - Bag Worn Out

My piece of swisse voile sheet from Spotlight, is not sewn together as a bag, just left it as sheet and its pegged into place, well anyway its lasted me so far about 20 brews, and I dont see any problems with it lasting another 20 or more. 15 bucks worth of material, and easy to clean with a...

2011 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hops!

Vaccuum packed my cascade today. Heaps more aroma than last year, I left them on the bine until they were really dry, and some browning, but they smell way better. Picked 1950 grams of wet hops, dried 4 days in the shed just on a screen door, packed 530 grams. So ended up with about 25% of...

    Using Hop Bags In Boil

So with all the replies so far, nobody has really said too much about flavour being affected negatively. Yes, I've noticed the film that builds up on the muslin bag. I'll reserve my opinion on using a hops bag until the taste test, and if thats ok, i'll keep using the bag. Otherwise, its...

    Using Hop Bags In Boil

Point tanken on sqeezing the bag, been doing that for years, now to try it with brewing, ferk i'm funny. Thanks nick, yes i did squeeze drain it last brew, keen to taste it in a bout 2-3 weeks. My muslin bag is heaps bigger than the amount of hops i'm throwing in, so that should be ok, and i...
