Does PBW lose its effectiveness over time?

How does PBW compare in price compared to sodium percarbonate? I've been using perc and I have very highly mineralised water. If I leave a solution soaking in anything for a period of time(usually 24 hrs is enough) then the calcium precipitates out of my water and sticks onto the side of my...

KK - 'Fermentasaurus' conical PET fermenter

Dan - I just found this interesting post by Lyrebird_Cycles relating to a slower fermentation under pressure. This explains why my fermentation is taking longer than my non pressure fermentations. Cheers Morrie

KK - 'Fermentasaurus' conical PET fermenter

Thanks for your help there Dan. I did release the PRV to rouse things up a bit today. When fermentation is eventually completed and I have released the PRV as you suggested and I only end up with about say 5psi @22ºC, what will happen when I crash chill to zero? Will the side of the FV get...

KK - 'Fermentasaurus' conical PET fermenter

I can actually see trub/yeast upward movement in the collection bottle and it looks to be ascending through the butterfly valve. Along with that and the colour of the beer I think it is still fermenting. I haven't taken a gravity reading though. I do have a krausen still but was not taking...

KK - 'Fermentasaurus' conical PET fermenter

G'day Brewers - I am currently running my first Fermentasaurus brew. Asking if others brewing under pressure have found the fermentation to take longer? I have a brew in now and it is still showing visible signs of fermentation activity in the collection bottle at 1 week. OG was around 1040...

    Kegging Setups

G'day Martin, I tried your number several times and I got a telstra type response more or less stating that the number was invalid. It did not go through to any answering service. Anyway, nice to meet you on here. I'm interested in those 23 litre kegs but not if there...

    Kegging Setups

I'm in the process of buying a kegging set up and found some 23 L kegs from Clever Brewing. They have an invalid phone number. Just wondering if anyone has dealt with them. Need to know if this is a legitimate business.

    No chill hop additions

Thanks for your help here fellas. That clarifies it for me.

    No chill hop additions

I'm playing with a DrSmurto TTL recipe and the hop additions are based on a no chill / steep for 10 to 20 mins after boil. I'd like to convert this to an instant chill right after the boil finishes. Can anyone suggest where I should adjust this hop schedule to achieve the same result. DrS's hop...

    Beersmith2

Thanks beer belly, I just thought there may have been an easier way to import grains other than to manually input all the associated data in the grain insert box/s.

    Beersmith2

Thanks mate I now have a good list of style guides to work with. I tried using add ons to import more grains but there doesn't seem to be a full comprehensive list of grains in the add ons. For example there only shows 14 Thomas Fawcett grains in the list when there are many more than that in...

    Beersmith2

I'm using Beersmith2 but I am not sure if I have all the style guides installed. For example I have found a Beersmith recipe that has a style guide of- Special/Best/Premium Bitter- but when I go into Beersmith2 to construct a recipe along the lines of that particular style guide, it is not...

    Dry hopping and cold crash

I'm starting to understand this bitterness thing much better now and I now only regard IBUs as a rough guide. I think the best gauge for bitterness is using IBU calcs and your own taste buds to decide how bitter certain hop additions are and adjust future brews accordingly.

    Dry hopping and cold crash

Thanks for your understanding of hop bitterness Manticle. I just wish it could be fully quantified using Beersmith etc, so at the end of the day I could have a reliable number as a reference to work with. Maybe I could count the dry hop into a 2 or 5 minute addition to try and estimate...

    Whirlfloc.. and what then?

Just hope its not bad shit to be ingesting mate. Just because its approved for use in food doesn't mean to say its non toxic and non carcinogenic...But then again what is alcohol.
