Last weekend when Jye was over for a brew session we got talking about an idea for an online automated beer exchange web site.

The concept was that you would sign up and put what beers you had on offer into the online ‘beer bank’. The most recent beers added, go to the bottom of the list, and you would assign a style to each beer you add.

In your beer exchange profile you would have the option select which beer styles you would like to receive.

For every beer you add to the bank you are to receive the next beer at the top of the bank which is of the styles in your profile.

The beers in the bank would remain anonymous, until it's your turn to receive some. At which point you would receive an automated email alerting you that 'User X' will be sending you some beers shortly, and 'User X' would receive an email with your delivery address.

In the email you receive, it will tell you what style is being sent and a link to a review page on the beer exchange. Once you have drunk your beer you would fill out the review and the results are emailed the sender. As part of the review you would give an overall rating (possibly out of 50) for the beer.

As part of your profile you will have a beer rating meter which is an average of all the beer reviews you have received. For every 10 points you will get 1 star out of 5.
E.g. if you have an average of 37 points, you would have 4 stars out of 5.

This rating system would help match brewers of equal caliber to yourself. When you start out you have to prove yourself to the exchange community by way of others reviewing your own beers that you are worthy to receive better beers.

I'm sure there are plenty of holes in the concept as it stands :p , but I'm sure something like this is very do’ able. But unfortunately this is only an idea as I know jack about web programming.

Ratebeer already has most of those features in its Trading system.

You have "want" and "have" lists, and a system to rate traders based on their ability to deliver the goods.

I know of RateBeer but haven't really browsed their site. Is their trading for home craftbrew or commercial craftbrew? I was thinking of something to evaluate home craftbrew.

I reckon that's a great idea. The web programming of that or some similar system is easily doable... the concern I'd have are governmental regulations/safety/shipping constraints, inspections, all that usual bureaucratic red tape that generally stuffs up decent people wanting to do simple enjoyable things.
