so I can picth a new yeast in the same brew with little ill effects?

I have started an alc ginger beer and the airlock doesn't seem to be bubbling. Its been a good 48 hours or so. It was an extract can that my wife bought ages ago and I used the same yeast that came with it. Probably not the best idea but I just thought I'd give it a go. What do you guys think...
