How to get started in Cider. The definitive(ish) guide to beginner&#39

Just found this thread, it’s really interesting! I’ve only ever brewed one cider, from a kit, and it’s not bad. That artificial sweetener definitely has a taste though. So after reading a big chunk of this thread, I have a few questions. 1. I understand that people put the tea in for tannins...

    Beer serving temperatures

Summer is coming up, and mates are starting to pop around for the odd beer or 3. Most of these guys aren't what you call beer connoisseurs. They just like your average beer, and they like it cold. So I've brewed plenty of simple beers to get me through the summer. I have a keg system, and one...

Cheap Thermostat/Temp Controller for Brew Fridge

Thanks Smoko, I will give that a try. It doesn't say anything like that in the instructions, weirdly. I still think I might end up with a 2nd one though (or possibly consider a STC-1000). Heat only mode works great when the temperature is always cold like in winter. And Cool only mode will work...

Cheap Thermostat/Temp Controller for Brew Fridge

Yes I just was doing a bit more research on it and I realised it has both heating and cooling. Well that's what I was trying to find. A unit that does bothheating and cooling. I'm pretty sure the one in the 2nd link does, but as you say it requires 2 sockets and 2 probes.

Cheap Thermostat/Temp Controller for Brew Fridge

Anybody have any experience with these? I bought one of these a few months ago and it’s been absolutely brilliant. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-White-Digital-Thermostat-for-Reptile-Snake-Aquarium-Mat-Lamp-2000W-/111798979290?hash=item1a07bd0ada:g:X8oAAOSwI-BWIOFY Coupled with a cheap reptile...

How badly did I mess up?

I was under the impression that if I left it on the yeast cake too long I'd get autolysis and off flavours. Just reading around a bit, seems that this is another point of home brewing that has somewhat changed in the 5 years or so since I last brewed. lol That being the case, I will give it...

    Beer Labels And Logos

Got the Mrs to do this for me years ago. Just started brewing again so thought I better finish it. I have Dutch and German heritage, the brewery name is based on my surname. What I wanna do is change the sky (and maybe the KH text colour) depending on the beer style. So maybe make it all dark...

How badly did I mess up?

Had the fermenter in a warm room (near the fireplace) for the last few days. Had temp probe stuck to side of fermenter as per above and have managed to keep the temperature between about 20-21.5 degrees. Taken another gravity reading tonight, and it's fallen ever so slightly (if at all, hard to...

How badly did I mess up?

The digital thermometer is now reading 21.0 when stuck to the side of the cider fermenter (which I believe is finished and am about to cold crash), 21.7 when stuck to the side of the Golden Ale fermenter (which I think is still going) and 23.2 in the open ambient air near the 2 fermenters. Both...

How badly did I mess up?

Thanks Rocker. I appreciate you pateince with me and detailed responses! To answer your question, I stupidly forgot to check the temp before going to work this morning. Will check it when I get home. :) Just for the record, gravity last night was 1.008 on the cider, so it's done, should come in...

How badly did I mess up?

Just in relation to that, taping the temp probe to the side of the fermenter, how accurate is this as a representation of wort temperature? My fermenters are always quite cool to the touch. Last night I tried what you suggested. I taped my digital thermometer probe directly to the side of the...

How badly did I mess up?

Thanks Rocker. With the temps you list, is that the brew temp or the ambient temp in the fridge? I'm guessing seeing as you have the temp controller, thats the ambient fridge temp? What temp controller do you have out of curiosity? It's been in there 5 days at ~18, so when I get home I might...

How badly did I mess up?

Thanks for the replies guys. Haven't take a reading using the hydrometer yet, will probably do that tonight or tomorrow. But I can definitely smell that something's fermenting. I was thinking that given the high starting gravity I might give it a little more time to ferment rather than the usual...

Android brewing apps for tablet, anything decent out there?

Thanks for your reply! Funny you mentioned BrewR. It was the first one I tried. Was really surprised to find it didn't have dates which I find very strange. Would've thought being able to track dates is a fairly big things for brewing. I just like the idea of being able to refer to the key dates...

Android brewing apps for tablet, anything decent out there?

Resurrecting a month old thread... Trying to find a simple home brew app, that basically just acts as a journal. There is a lot of apps out there, and most seem pretty hardcore for hardcore brewers. I'm a kit brewer, so I don't need anything super complex. At the moment, I record some basic...

How badly did I mess up?

Evening lads. Been out of brewing for a LONG time. Must be 4 or 5 years now. Thought it was high time I got back on board, so yesterday I went down to the LHBS and brought some basic supplies, and kits to do 4 brews. 1x ESB Belgian Golden Ale 5 litre FWK, 1x Draught Can with brew enhancer with...

    Well, I Froze My Primary...

It's still in the fridge, but the fridge door is wide open. Hopefully it's done by tomorrow arvo. I guess it'll all come down to whether i'm feeling lazy or not tomorrow afternoon. Lazy=keg Not lazy=secondary The keg is clean and ready to go, the secondary is not.

    Well, I Froze My Primary...

Anyone have any idea how long it'll take to completely defrost? It looks like it's gonna be about 18-20 degrees here in Melbourne for the next couple of days.

    Well, I Froze My Primary...

I was thinking I would just keg it. As I said, i've been lazy lately. If people tell me it'll significantly improve with a stint in the secondary, then i'll do it, but otherwise, meh. I just kegged and carbed the other one, shes hoppy but good.

    Well, I Froze My Primary...

I keep reading about it, but I have never actually done it. Apparently one of my brewing fridges has decided it wants to be a freezer now. I went out to the garage to check on my 2 fermenters. 1 fridge was sitting beautifully at -2o, but the other "fridge" was sitting at around -13o! Needless to...
