    Sparkling Amber Ale ..

Given that Grant has doubts about which crystal he used, and also the colour (which I didn;t see but I assume it is quite a bit darker that Crystal 40 would give), maybe Grant used Crystal 80 Lovibond which incidentally is 156EBC (or close enough). I can fell a sample batch coming on...

    Sparkling Amber Ale ..

Hi Grant, I am very disappointed I missed out on what is stated as an exceptional brew :( Thanks for sharing your recipe, I am sure to give it a go. One question though is that I have thrown the recipe into Beersmith and it shows the colour as only 10 EBC which seems a bit light for an amber...

    Wiring A Fridgemate

I did a quick check on my last fermentation to see how accurate affixing the probe via a large piece of bluetack (to cover the whole probe) is in measuring the inner temp of the fermenting wort. I admit that I only checked it during the second day of fermentation, but using a digital...

    Wiring A Fridgemate

I must say that I used the following for mine and found it to be quite good also http://helms-deep.cable.nu/~rwh/blog/?p=29 Nice effort though this one

Are You A 'serial' No Chill Cube 'filler?

Geoffi, 1 x 17L cube hold about 8 Kg grain, depending on the grain of course. My 8.125 Kg of Munich from the IBU Bulk Buy fit perfectly into a Brewers Selection cube (17L). The NNL cubes are actually 18L filled to capacity.

Using A Hot Water System As A Hot Liquor Tank

I go even closer than that Rob2. I fill my HLT direct from the outlet valve on the gas hot water system. Comes out at 72 C or thereabouts so I can sometimes even sparge with water I have straight from the HWS. I just place a 1m length of silicon hose on the end of the copper outlet valve ppe...

    My No Chill Cube Expanded?

Yep, I agree, kids aren't that strong. When I put the lids on the NC cuibes I do them up so damn tight that it hurts my hands. Getting them off is a nightmare (gotta get a spanner for the lid) but at least I know that it is absolutely aitight sealed. You did remember to tip the cube over to...

    Maximum Boil Volume?

You can do what many in the Illawarra Brewers Union, and many others, do and that is to do a higher gravity boil. In my keggle I boil approx 40 litres of wort at a higher OG. After the boil, I have lost 2L to evaporation (yes only 5% / hour as only a rolling boil is required for break, etc) ...

    Maximum Boil Volume?

Adding some of your hops as first wort hops will greatly lessen the boil over likelihood. I have been doing so now for well over a year and, unless you are boiling way too fast, the kettle never looks like actually boiling over, even on subsequent additions of hops, whirlfloc, etc. Give FWH a...

Black Mould Spots In The Bottom Of A Cube

Napisan (generic brand), PSR or Bleach & Vinegar all get a go at my place. The is no doubt in my mind that Napisan appears to get off stubborn hardened stuff better that the other two but all three work a treat.

Chiswick Bitter From Big Brew Day

Sorry mate, will get some around to you soon. Pumpy, I hopped at all stages as per the recipe. For the keg hopping I got a cheap pair of stockings (///'s idea) bought at Franklins (yes I think I did get some looks at the counter), cut out a 15cm piece from the leg, sanitised with Iodophor...

    Time It Takes To Ag

Similar situation for me too. The water from the relief valve of my gas hot water system comes out at 70C so most times I only need 5 or so mins on the burner to get it up to strike temps or sparge temp. Big difference from the regulated temp I get inside the house which is only about 55C...

    I Need Some Advice

Another consideration is that whilst kegging would save you time at bottling, AG adds time to making the wort. So if time is a consideration (young family, etc) then kegs might get you some time back. But from a previous kits & bits & partial brewer, AG is awesome. BUT, as I type, have you...

    Racking To Secondry?

Yep, Only good reason to rack these days for me is to get to the yeast under the beer for the next batch

Chiswick Bitter From Big Brew Day

OK, I haven't heard back from Brad Smith (PM'd him yesterday) however I have had a small amount of time to do some experimetation. Here are the results. You start with 17L in cube at end of boil (OG approx 1.048) When you add 4L to dilute (final batch size 21L) Beersmith shows OG drops to to...

Chiswick Bitter From Big Brew Day

Hey Lagers, I work with Beersmith using the settings as shown in the attachment below. If you have the equipment setup like this, and you add the appropriate amount of top up water (shown towards the bottom; Defined as: "The amount of water added to the wort after the boil has completed to...

    Hosetails & Compression Fittings

I just popped into Enzed in Unanderra and they had the 1/2 inch male threaded to 12mm hosetail in brass for $5.50. Sure, it doesn't have the bling factor, but was just what I needed to decant the kettle into my cube.
