    thermostats, temp controllers, etc

Thanks for the tips. Anyone get their stc-1000 from a Hong Kong seller on eBay? (less than 50% of the retail price). Are they the same thing or a cheapo chinese knock off? (Retailers need not reply :)

    thermostats, temp controllers, etc

Acquired a grarage fridge over the holidays and would like to get an ac controller with temperature probe. Seems simple enough: like a timer you plug your fridge into but with a temperature probe instead of a clock. Seems you can spend from $20 to $100 on these things. Then there's something...

    Kit Brew Temp

beat me to it. absolutely agree. Isn't posting in a way that discourages community exchange just as likely to cause people to continue with non-standard methods and possibly leave this forum and brewing altogether? Sarcasm is accepted if that's the most expansive form of wit that you can...

    Kit Brew Temp

totally agree. Not much could misconstrued as gospel. It's obvious who the beer gods are on here and their knowledge is great. I can't think of a better analogy (and not saying this always happens here BTW) but imagine if you bought a weight bench and weights and the online community suggested...

ok so for today's batch I cleaned the FV as per usual using sodium percarbonate. But this time I followed that with a good dousing of boiling water then lid on and shake until the steam stopped hissing. This was routine before switching from bleach to Na-perc but I must have stopped due to the...

    K&k Boil Qs

Sounds like that would be the hot break. Not sure what volume you're using for the starter, but for a the volume of a partial boil the break will be more, umm, voluminous. Have been adding hop pellets to kits & bits brews for about a year. I would suggest boiling in the gravity range suggested...

    Kit Brew Temp

Well done. I only use wet towels myself (and the weather forecast) for my kit brews. Have hit the high twenties on occasion but won't say they were good beers in case I insinuate possession of knowledge of what a good beer is when I just don't :chug:

    2nd Brew

yeah got this the first couple of times dry pitching the yeast, about 5 days in. Thought it was going bad but it turned out great. Use US05 nearly all the time now and since I started rehydrating before pitching it hasn't done that again

    Temperature Control

Do you run that fridge with the lid off? Must own a power station!

Yeah, have a lot of bottles (and no, I don't drink 5 gallons of beer per week on my own. Possibly more like 4  ). Generally I sample a bottle at 3 weeks, but most are consumed between 30 and 60 days. The exceptional stuff (really good or really bad) are held over for 100 days or so. I've...

    Off Smelling Hefeweizen

Followed the kit instructions for the rest: 500g LDM, 300g dextrose. The bots are stored in boxes covered by blankets or towels and under benches, tables, beds, old car chaises, shipping containers, buried in the backyard and basically anywhere anywhere dark and at a constant and comfortable...

    Off Smelling Hefeweizen

Bottled a Coopers wheat beer 17/11 last year using WB-06 -- thanks for the reminder to do this again! Was only doing 7 day primary fermentations back then. I can remember the trub still bubbling away when done bottling. This was one occasion where the plastic bottles definitely had an advantage...

    Pitched 2 Yeast Coppers?

Google yeast pitching calculator. Mr Malty has one that gives volumes for dry, liquid and slurry. Haven't used it in practise but it does open the eyes as to the insufficient quantities of dry yeast in the kits.... unless you want to brew with an OG of 1.030.

Just for the record it's 44 out of 45. One batch had a slight aroma of ethyl acetate on the trub after bottling. Prior to using sodium-percarbonate I was using a bleach solution (250mL in 25L). mhb put me onto the sodium-percarbonate (not via this forum, in his shop). As bleach breaks down some...

Seems so. Palmer says, "In my opinion, percarbonate-based cleaners are the best choice for equipment cleaning". So cleanliness is next to godliness but the beer triangle says "sanitation". Germs are bad, ask anyone who spent time in a hospital in the 18th Century. And surfactants aren't...

All good and thanks for staying nice - really feeling the love :D Others have done long dissertations on the wisdom of forums versus scientific publications. On the internet no-one knows you're a dog and all that. I like this forum and have gained some great tips here, have seen some far-out...

Apologies here too. Here I was thinking this was an online forum when it's obviously a highly influential peer-reviewed scientific journal. Subtlety is a spectrum ranging from sledgehammers to what-even-am-i-saying.

    Bugger

Hows me setting my 45th brew of the year today (somehow fell a week behind) "sanitising" with sodium percarbonate? Half-arsed sage advice, yes, but the tea-leaves and goat intestines say it should work!

First Brew Done... Some Ideas On What Went Wrong?

Sounds like you had a stuck ferment and failed to carbonate. Give it another week. Some yeasts have a higher flocculation leaving less in the bottle which leads to longer secondary. S-04 is one of these. The kit yeasts get a bit of flack, but the only issues I can see with these are poor or...
