    Hop Utilizations & Beeralchemy Software

Hi all - Im looking at going from extract brewing to a partial with a BIAB mini-mash. The style i'm playing with at the moment is a pils and I'm doing large(ish) batches as keg fillers. I've downloaded beerAlchemy (for mac, seems like one of the few) which is quite nice to use, but the hop...

    Fill Volume For Natural Carbonation

Can anyone give a guide for a fill height for a 50L keg for natural conditioning? I was thinking about 10% down from full - so something like 45L - but would prefer to get the best value out of the keg in terms of filling it to 50L. Thanks - Chris

    Continuous Yeast Use

So, my brewing project has gone from the occasional keg filler to putting a 60L fermenter down each week. This is partially due to consumption, partially due to going from ales to a pilsner which I want to give plenty of time to lager and cold condition. My plan is to rack from the primary once...

    Nitrogen For Dispensing

Hi all - hoping for some advice on nitrogen vs Co2 for dispensing. At the moment I am dispensing a pilsner, sparkling wine and soda water and so I have a need to maintain pretty high carbonation for the soda and sparkling wines, but of course not so much with the beer. I'm leaving the sparkling...

    Extract Light/mid-strength

Hi all - I am wanting to make a low(er) alc pilsner starting with LME. It's going to be a lunch beer and so having something around the 3% point would be perfect for a session style. I have been told that yeasts need some simple sugars to get a start on the ferment - so should I be including...

    Apple Beer

Apologies first up if this has been covered before - Has anyone experimented with adding malt to apple juice for a cider? I was thinking a little LME to give beer head retention (well, some head retention - my ciders don't hold any!) and some body to the finished drink. Cheers- Chris

    Hopping After Ferment

I tried a complete wort kit clone of Fat Yak, and yesterday I racked it off yeast lees after a cold crash for 2 days. Of course I tasted it, and the result was a little surprising. The colour is pretty dark - something more like an amber ale than a pale. The nose & palate are all caramelised...

    Non-beer Yeasts

Can anyone comment on the use of non-beer yeasts for beer brewing? Specifically, I'm wondering about using wine yeasts (I have access to a huge range of these in the fridge at work). The style of beer I'm looking at is a lager (well, a pilsner) so I'm thinking a good strong wine yeast like UV-43...

    First Extract - Recipe Comments

Hi all - i've just got into homebrewing from a winemaking background - so I'm finding the whole experience quite daunting. I've had a couple of quite successful brews starting with a coopers wheat kit to get my legs, and come out with a pleasant but fairly plain hoegarten clone with some orange...
