just to add my 5c worth to an old topic. i blew up my element doing this mod when my grainbag stuck to the element and proceeded to burn. rookie mistake yes, but the boil dry switch is there for a reason. mine looked like the above pic too, which after talking to crown i found out the element...

sour beer... hmmmm i might make a starter anyway and have a bit of a taste after boiling before it cools... the grain profile i used could be similar to a berliner weisse. apart from the burnt polyester... but i did get it out of that pretty quick after it happened and the grains werent...

bummer... consensus seems to be its gone. just out of curiousity, is it the long mash time that makes it useless, or the temp being too low, or the standing time between mash and boil? or just plainly the taste of burnt swiss voile? :)
