2011 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hops!

The hops are just starting to get going. Got my twine all rigged up - the poles are 6m tall.... Hopefully I'll get a good yield this year.

    Tasmanian Wild Hop

If they're from the old industry they're likely to be Canterbury Goldings or American Clusters. Let us know how you go...

Where To Buy 5 Gallon (19 L) Glass Carboy?

G&G in Melbourne have the jug shaped round ones for around $13. Looked at one today, but passed as I've got a toddler so figured the brew would just end up on the floor (along with the carboy)! I guess you can brew in anything - it's the ingredients and process that makes the difference. Only...

    Tasmanian Wild Hop

They're probably from around the Forrest area - there's a great book from the local historical society about the hop industry in Forrest. The industry died out after WW2 and they replaced hops with spuds and cattle. I also seem to remember talking to someone else on this board who had wild...

    2010 Hop Plantations

I got 50-odd grams (dry) of Cascade and Tardiff de Borgogne.... Not a good yield compared to last year and my Goldings did SFA again this year. Has anyone had much luck growing Goldings? Not sure if the plants are no good or whether the Otways weather is too wet for them. Are you in the...

    Help With Hops

sounds like you have a living piece of history! where you are isn't too far from Forrest and I think hops were grown out around the East Branch of the Barwon river and pennyroyal creek. a 3-generations old plant would have a huge rhizome crown (a big mass of woody stems).

    Help With Hops

There used to be hops fields around Forrest in the late 19-century and up until WW2. Not sure where in the Otways you are, but they could be a remnant of the old hopfields. I got a book from the local historical society which says the hops grown at the turn of the 20th century were Goldings...

    Where To Buy Hop Rhizomes?

I bought 4 for $48 from Hopswest last year. But as he only sells them seasonally, the price might change from year to year. I'd keep an eye on Hopwest on ebay.

    What's Wrong With My Hops?

Your hops look good! Much better than the ones I got this year. Picked them too late.... :( But - they still smelled great in the brew-pot!

    Great Ocean Road Breweries?

I drove through Forrest yesterday - there's a big sign hanging outside the building with "brewery and cafe opening soon" - so fingers crossed it won't be long. Might even be open in time for the honeymoon!

    2009 Hop Plantations

Since we're sharing photos. Here are my six (first year) plants in the Otways. The Goldings seems to have been attacked by something, so no joy there. I've harvested the Hallertau Hersbrucker already, but the Cascades and Tardiff are waiting for Easter. I think I've left it a little late...

    2009 Hop Plantations

Checked on my six plants last week - the Goldings is taking off, with the Tardif and Hersbrucker not far behind. The Cascades are a little slow off the mark.

    2009 Hop Plantations

Here is my "plantation". Six hop plants at my in-laws place. The Tardif de Borgogne, Goldings and a Cascade have sprouted. Waiting on the other Cascade and the Hallertau to get moving.

    'tipping' Hop Bines

A quick search of the topic - turns up this info by crozdog found some info on Chinese hop production that you might be interested in: From the International Hop Growers 2005 Convention http://www.czhops.cz/tc/pdf/chinesehop.pdf http://www.sapporobeer.jp/english/kenkyu/agri/china.html...

    Cooper's Hops - Pre 1960's

+1 to that. I've added Huonville to my list of "must visit one day" places as well.

    Cooper's Hops - Pre 1960's

Those 'indigenous' hops would be ones imported from UK/Europe and planted commercially in the past. I'd say they're spraying these wild hops to ensure that there are no male plants that would cross pollinate with the new commercial plantations (and create hybrid strains - not what a commercial...

    Cooper's Hops - Pre 1960's

Probably UK/European varieties grown in Australia - Fuggles, Goldings, etc. Victoria & Tasmania have been growing hops since the 19th century: http://www.hopproducts.com.au/production/r...op_gardens.html. I've heard that the Pride of Ringwood variety was bred (in Ringwood, Vic!!) to suit...
