    When To Harvest Hops?

Hi all, I'm sure a few of you would have their own pet hop plant. Just wondering what time of year you usually harvest the flowers. I'm in north tas, and the flowers on my cascade plat are about an inch long. I've watched the youtube video about harvesting hops, but just wanted to know when...

    Dry Coopers Ale Yeast

It tastes fine, I can't make out anything wrong with the beer, it just has a ring of 0.5mm sized white dots left on the bottle neck at the level of the beer. It doesn't settle out or wash off the side of the bottle. There is normal yeast sediment in the bottom as usual.

    Dry Coopers Ale Yeast

Evening all, Not sure if anyone else has had this problem before. I have only used coopers ale yeast twice, but both times I have used it, about three weeks after the brew has been bottled, I get some small white dots forming in the neck of the bottle right on the surface level of the beer...

    Beersmith Problems

Hi All, Anyone every had any problems with the beersmith program before? I have 20 or so recipes I have entered and made before. When I go in and try and open them, none of the ingredients (grains, hops etc) come up in the ingredients list, only the totals for grains and hops below, along...

    2010 Tasmania Beer Fest Comp

Hi all, I emailed the brew shop in hobart for some more info the other day. They said you can enter all grain brews in any of the categories you want, not just the open section. I'm a bit gutted, by the time I heard about it I only have 5 stubbies of my favorite batch left, and this is not...

Efficiency Problems. What Am I Doing Wrong?

G'day John, I had a problem with my efficency a while ago, but it was the other end of the spectrum - I was getting to high an og than what I was meant to be. I later found out that my cheap ass kitchen scales I used for measuring grain were fairly inaccurate, and I was adding more grain than...

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to squeeze a brew in after work tonight, might leave the kolsch idea for a weekend when I have the correct yeast..

    Nottingham @ 14 Deg.

Probably better to wait and get the right yeast, might still brew anyway, see what it comes out like.

    Nottingham @ 14 Deg.

Hi All, I've heard nottingham can produce lager style beers when fermented low at around 14 deg. Would this be my best bet to produce something close to style for a kolsch, or would 1056 be a better option? Cheers, Giz.

How Long Can You Keep And Re-use Yaest Slurry?

Well there has been a "flavour" creeping into the last two brews. Not sure what it is, the beers are still pretty reasonable, but the same taste has just come through in the last couple if batches, along with a drop in attenuation, and slow to get going after pitching, which made me wonder if...

How Long Can You Keep And Re-use Yaest Slurry?

HI all, I have been re-using yeast from one brew to the next, by keeping the yeast slurry from the bottom of the fermenter, rinsing it a few time to get most of the crap out, then keeping it in the fridge. The last couple of brews have not fermented out properly, finishing at around 1030...

Stuck Fermentation - A Yeast Or Mash Problem?

I'm not sure about the thermometer, I assume its accurate. Its one of those hand held ones with stainless steel backing. Probably should get another one to compare it too. Thanks again for the comments.. Giz

Stuck Fermentation - A Yeast Or Mash Problem?

Hi all, Fermentation from my weekends brew has stopped at 1.028 after starting at 1.052. Just wondering if this is a problem with the yeast, or more so the coversion to maltose/dextrins during the mash. I mash in an esky which is pretty good at holding temperature. Usually only loses a...
