Does the drum have to be plastic to ferment for beer/mash or can it be an adapted metal tin with lock and tap? Wondered if metal may impart unwanted flavour/impurities - hence the use of plastic.

Is it possible to use a steel drum as a fermenter rather than a plastic drum - if it can be made airtight and has a lock in the top and a tap at the base? Or does the metal impart flavour/impurities into the beer/mash?

Hi am new to this site but finding the menu interesting already. I'm a novice brewer but the ex took all my gear so am trying to reestablish - so I'm not drinking tap water all summer. If anyone has brewing gear that's in XS to their needs [if that's possible] please feel free to let me know...
