    Calculated Bitterness vs. Perceived Bitterness

How long does it take from flameout to 70C? I thought the extracted bitterness decreases exponentially as temp goes down, are you starting your hop stand steep at 70C?

    Barleyman Mid-week Madness

Thanks Nick & guys! Hopefully the shiny addition to my set up will improve my beers exponentially! Can't wait to pop down and I should probably bring along an extra bottle of my finest for the bloke next door too :)

    Weird Whirlpool results

Hey all, quick one - not sure if this was a fluke or if anyone has seen it before and knows where I went a bit wrong. My brew yesterday went well, but after whirlpool (done by hand with a long spoon) - instead of the normal cone or mound of trub in the middle of the pot, I had a weird...

    Gravity Reading Question

yep, tbh I would run out some of the trub-by wort first before testing - for me this is sometimes just 1/4 - 1/2 of a hyrdometer tube. if it was a few points out I would say, don't worry about it but perhaps test again as that is quite a difference. crash chilling often gives me clearer wort...

    Barleyman Mid-week Madness

Quick delivery & great packing! Ordered weekend, Shipped this morning, arrived before 3:30 pm. Yeast came in a styrofoam box with ice gel. Hopefully I'll get that brew bucket, but even if I don't - thanks Nick!

How to get a creamier porter

I've had limited experience drinking beers with lactose and haven't brewed with it - but when I tried beer with it, I actually thought it left a slightly weird mouthfeel. This probably isn't the best way to describe it but I thought it felt a tad oily... or at the very least, weird - not the...

    Help on biab IPA

I would be more inclined to use the simcoe as a flameout addition than dry hop, you might find the aroma and some flavour lasting longer than a dry hop. I'm no expert with vic secret but a lot of people seem to use flowers for late additions although that is sometimes for their filtering and...

    Questions for first BIAB

Yeah rdevjun is a legend of maxi biab so listen to him. I use similar set up and tbh often get about 11L in the fermenter before top up if I leave ALL the trub in the kettle. As the others said, keep it simple, have fun and record all the numbers BUT don't worry too much about the numbers. I did...

    Simple IPA recipe

I'm on my phone but there is a good thread either here or in hops forum I think where there is some good info on ibus from flameout and whirlpool additions. They do decrease as the temp drops but based on your recipe I would be pretty surprised if your beer wasnt quite bitter. I did read 50gx3...

    Bulk primed with panella

let us know how it turns out, could be good for APA or amber ales too

    BU-GU Ratio

To the OP it is quite a valid question. I've wondered before if I had a number that worked for me so I could alter recipes to my tastes but it is a bit tricky as I like quite a lot of different styles. So far, I basically figured what Dicko did - that for most beers I make, I prefer them more...

Bottling from primary spigot - Will it work?

Yep, I've found cold crashing to be excellent at compacting the yeast cake. Much easier for bottling

    Winter Conditioning

Sometimes an extra week or so on the yeast can help clean it up, depends on the beer though. If you are using a slower yeast or the temps drop, I'd leave it a little longer.

    Nottingham yeast pitching temp

If you can next time, it is better to do it the other way around, e.g. pitch at 17C and let it rise to ferment temps at 18-22C. Or at least if you want a cleaner ferment.

Calculation of IBU additions after flame out (no chill/whirlpool)

Very interesting, thanks OP. Scotty if you or the YH guys made fresh wort, they would definitely be the first fresh wort kits I would want to buy!

    Hop Thief 6 Clone

Centennial + Citra is #5. I've seen it around at a few places the last week still but am keen to check out the new one.

just about to bulk prime, but confused about how much DME to use...

By LDM he probably means light dried malt extract - which = DME, just that there are also amber and dark dried malt extracts... In the past I have used the fermentation temperature for bulk priming calc. I Also tend to go on the low end for most styles (e.g. 2.0-2.5)

    120 minute IPA Clone

I just tried a few of the DFH beers - mainly 90 min and the 60 min and maybe a more session IPA?! The 90 is excellent, I thought I was drinking a 5-6% beer it was so well balanced. Not sure if I would love the 120 min, but I did chuckle when I saw your hop schedule! Will be on the look out for...
