    Steep Vs. Mash

Experts, Is there any reason (other than efficiency) why you couldn't use steeped specialty grains ONLY as your fermentable component of a brew (i.e. no DME, LME or base malts)? You would not need to mash but you would obviously still need to boil. I've read conflicting data on this forum...

    Wedding Beers

Going to my mates' wedding next year at Murray's Brewery. I've got a feeling the beers supplied will be slightly better than the usual wedding fare.

    Newcastle! Where To Drink?

I also recommend the Clarendon Hotel. It is very close for you Bribie if you're staying at the CBD. They have two guest taps that change every month. Last month they were Moo Brew's Velvet Sledgehammer and a Lord Nelson beer. They also have lots of variety in the bottle and last Friday they had...

    What Are You Brewing III

Thanks Florian. Just the kind of advice I was looking for, especially since I was already wondering whether the pumpkin was better in the mash or the boil. I think I might split the difference and mash half of it and add the other half to the end of the boil. Luckily I'm only making a 10L batch...

    What Are You Brewing III

Thanks for the feedback outbreak. I've already got my pumpkin, it's a homegrown jap pumpkin from my parents' farm to make the brew even more home-made. I was planning to roast the pumpkin too because after a bit of reading on the subject it seems like the way to go. I also BIAB but I don't have...

    Buying Kegs

I bought 2 kegs and almost all my initial start up gear for kegging from mybeershop a fair while ago now and everything is good. I have no qualms in recommending them.

    Mini Mash For Idiots

Including the specialty malts in the mash does the same job as steeping. Good advice from jayse to help you save time.

    Mini Mash For Idiots

gjn200 have you checked out NickJD's guide to BIAB for $30? You can learn some easy (and cheap) mash techniques from his guide and apply it to your partial. It doesn't cover your oats question but might help you to understand the process of a simple mash. Here's the link...

First Keg'd Beer Is All Foam

mattric I only got into kegging myself last year and found out pretty quickly that force carbonating is somewhat of a black art! I had the exact same problems with over-carbing and ending up with schooners full of head. The way I deal with it is to do the following: 1 - Turn the gas off the...

    Question Regarding Gas

I reckon it is over-carbed. The way I overcome this if it happens is to: 1 - Turn the gas off completely. 2 - Pour some beers using just the pressure in the keg until it stops pouring. 3 - Turn the gas back on a touch and then attempt a pour. 4 - Keep adjusting the gas back up in small...

    Babbs Murray's Craft Brewery Visit

sim The airport is roughly halfway between Murray's and Newcastle. So about 20mins from the brewery to the north and then about 25mins to town to the south. Unless by town you're talking about Nelson Bay, then it's only about 5-10mins drive north of Murray's. I wish I could make this but I...

    Citra Hop

So what are you saying Hopper? That Citra, Galaxy AND Centennial are the same hop??? (sorry, couldn't help myself) I've never used Citra myself but I do have 90g of Citra pellets waiting in the fridge to be my next smash ale. booyablack

Gettin My Head Around This Whole Hop Thing

I definitely agree with Pennywise. I remember making a hop tea with those teabags for my first couple of brews. What a waste of time that is. Loose dry hops is the go. Dry hopping won't cause cloudiness as you fear but the "danger" is that you can get the odd floatie in your stubbie/glass...

    Lcpa Extract Recipe

This is a bit of a coincidence since I converted argon's LCPA recipe to extract for myself and brewed it last Monday! I used 1.5kg LDME and a 1.5kg tin of Morgan's liquid wheat malt extract (these are typically 50/50 wheat and barley malt). The rest of the recipe was as per the all-grain...
